Peugeot RCZ R
The Peugeot RCZ R held the distinction of being the most powerful road-going Peugeot ever produced when it launched in 2013. Based on the striking RCZ coupe — itself inspired by the 908 RC concept — the R version was developed by Peugeot Sport with a single-minded focus on performance. The 1.6-liter THP engine was pushed to 270 horsepower, while a Torsen limited-slip differential tamed the prodigious power through the front wheels. Alcon provided the enormous 380mm front brake discs, and the suspension was lowered and stiffened for sharper response. The exterior received subtle but effective aerodynamic additions including a larger rear spoiler and diffuser. Inside, lightweight Sabelt bucket seats and Alcantara trim set the sporting mood. The RCZ R's distinctive double-bubble roof — a design feature shared with the Alfa Romeo 8C — gave it a unique silhouette that stood out from the crowd. On the road, the RCZ R delivered a surprising level of driver engagement, with precise steering, strong brakes, and enough power to keep experienced drivers thoroughly entertained. It was proof that Peugeot Sport could still create genuinely exciting performance cars.
The THP engine's timing chain stretch is the primary mechanical concern. Torsen LSD is reliable. Alcon brakes are expensive to service but highly effective. Carbon buildup on direct injection valves needs attention. Verify R specification — lesser RCZ models exist. The Magna Steyr build quality is generally high.
Built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria alongside other premium vehicles. Only approximately 3,000 R versions were built. The THP engine was the same unit used in the MINI JCW and later 308 GTI 270. Peugeot Sport developed the car alongside their WRC and endurance racing programs.
