Peugeot 404 Injection
The Peugeot 404 is one of the toughest, most durable automobiles ever built. For decades, it has been the taxi of choice across Africa, the Middle East, and developing nations worldwide, regularly accumulating 500,000+ miles with minimal maintenance. The 404's legendary reliability and ruggedness made it the automotive equivalent of the AK-47 — simple, effective, and nearly impossible to kill.
Designed by Pininfarina and launched in 1960, the 404 featured clean, understated styling with a hint of Italian elegance. The design was conservative and practical, with large doors, spacious interior, and excellent visibility. It looked like a sedan should look — no styling gimmicks, just honest, functional design.
The 404's engineering was sophisticated for its era. Independent front suspension with double wishbones and coil springs, a live rear axle with coil springs and trailing arms, and rack-and-pinion steering provided excellent ride quality and handling. The disc brakes on the front wheels were advanced for the early 1960s. The build quality was exceptional — heavy-gauge steel, robust mechanical components, and simple electrical systems that could be repaired anywhere.
The 404 Injection variant, introduced in 1962, featured Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection — a racing-derived system that increased power to 96 hp and improved throttle response. This made the 404 Injection a genuine sports sedan, capable of 103 mph and surprisingly engaging to drive. The fuel injection system was complex but robust, used in everything from BMW 2002s to early Porsche 911s.
Over 2.8 million 404s were built in France, Africa, and elsewhere before production finally ended in 1975 (and continued in some markets into the 1980s). The 404 is still a common sight in many African nations, where 60-year-old examples continue to serve as taxis. This is the ultimate testament to Peugeot's engineering prowess in the 1960s — a car designed to last forever, and it did.
The 404 is undervalued despite legendary durability. European-spec cars are cleaner than African examples but rarer. The Injection variant is the most desirable with its Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection and better performance. Rust affects sills, floors, and rear wheel arches despite robust construction. Mechanical components are simple and durable — engines regularly exceed 300,000 miles. Parts availability good through Peugeot specialists and African supply networks. Station wagon (Break) variants are popular. The coupe/cabriolet (Pininfarina-built) are extremely rare and valuable. Values rising as people recognize the 404's historical significance as one of the most durable cars ever built.
Total 404 production: approximately 2,885,267 (1960-1975, later in some markets). Variants included sedan, station wagon (Break), pickup, and rare coupe/cabriolet models styled by Pininfarina. The Injection variant featured Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection (96 hp) vs. standard carburetor (72 hp). Built in France, assembled in numerous countries including Kenya, where production continued into the 1980s. Still used as taxis in Africa.
