Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution
The Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution was one of the most extreme homologation specials ever produced for rally-raid competition. Built to meet FIA regulations for the Dakar Rally, the Pajero Evolution featured massively widened bodywork (+80mm), a high-output 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 hp, four-wheel independent suspension with huge suspension travel, and Brembo brakes. The body modifications were extensive — wider fenders, integrated air scoops, a huge rear spoiler, and a shortened wheelbase for agility. On the Dakar Rally, the Pajero was dominant, winning the event 12 times. The Evolution road car distilled this competition expertise into a production vehicle that could tackle any terrain while still being road-legal. Only 2,500 units were built for homologation purposes, making the Pajero Evolution one of the rarest and most sought-after Japanese performance vehicles. It represents a unique niche — perhaps the only true performance SUV that was designed primarily for off-road competition rather than on-road speed.
Extremely rare — finding one is the biggest challenge. Check for off-road damage (some were actually used off-road). The 6G74 V6 is generally reliable. Verify all Evo-specific body panels are present (irreplaceable). AWD system needs regular maintenance. Brembo brakes are expensive but standard parts.
Built specifically for Dakar Rally homologation. Only 2,500 produced. The 6G74 3.5L V6 was tuned for maximum mid-range torque for off-road use. The widened body and modified suspension were derived directly from the Dakar competition cars. All-independent suspension was unusual for a serious off-roader in this era.
