Mitsubishi FTO GPX Mivec
The Mitsubishi FTO GPX was one of Japan's best-kept secrets — a car so good it won Japan's Car of the Year in 1994, yet was never officially sold outside of Japan. The FTO GPX featured a remarkable 2.0-liter V6 engine with MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing Electronic Control system), essentially Mitsubishi's version of Honda's VTEC. The tiny V6 produced 200 hp at a screaming 7,500 RPM, delivering its power with a tenor howl that rivaled anything from Honda's S2000 era. The front-wheel-drive chassis was well-sorted, with multi-link rear suspension and precise Getrag-sourced gearbox keeping the driver entertained through corners. Despite being FWD, the FTO GPX was remarkably neutral in handling thanks to excellent weight distribution and Mitsubishi's engineering expertise honed through years of rally competition. The styling was sleek and purposeful, with pop-up headlights (early models) and a compact, well-proportioned body. For enthusiasts who discover the FTO, it becomes a revelation — proof that Japan in the 1990s produced some of the finest driver's cars ever made, often never intended for export.
JDM import only — verify mileage and service history. The MIVEC V6 needs regular maintenance of the variable valve timing system. Oil changes critical. Check for MIVEC solenoid issues (rough idle if failing). Front CV joints and boots wear. Rust check essential on any imported car.
JDM-only model — never officially exported. Won 1994 Japan Car of the Year. The 6A12 MIVEC V6 was unique to the FTO. A non-MIVEC V6 and 1.8L four-cylinder were also available. The Getrag-sourced gearbox was shared with the Lancer Evo. An INVECS-II automatic with F1-style paddle shift was also available.
