Honda NSX Type R (NA2)
The 2001 Honda NSX Type R (NA2) represents the final and most refined version of Honda's legendary Type R treatment applied to the NSX platform. The NA2 generation, produced from 2002 to 2005, featured the revised 3.2-liter VTEC V6 engine producing 290 horsepower, fixed headlights (replacing the pop-ups of the NA1), and an even more comprehensive weight reduction program than the original 1992 Type R.
The 3.2-liter C32B engine, with its VTEC variable valve timing system, produced its peak power at 7300 rpm and revved to an 8000 rpm redline. The larger displacement provided more mid-range torque than the NA1's 3.0-liter unit while maintaining the high-rev character that defined the NSX Type R experience. The engine was hand-assembled and individually balanced, with each unit bearing the builder's signature.
Weight reduction was even more aggressive than the original Type R. Carbon-fiber engine cover, Recaro carbon-Kevlar seats, deletion of the audio system and sound deadening, lightweight battery, single-pane rear window, and other measures brought the NA2 Type R to approximately 1,270 kg (2,800 lbs) -- remarkably light for a mid-engined V6 sports car. The result was a power-to-weight ratio that ensured the NSX Type R could compete with newer, more powerful rivals.
The NA2 Type R's chassis featured revised spring rates, recalibrated dampers, and a lower ride height compared to the standard NSX. The Brembo brake system provided excellent stopping power, and the limited-slip differential ensured predictable, exploitable handling. The six-speed manual gearbox (replacing the NA1 Type R's five-speed) provided close ratios that kept the engine in its powerband.
Driving the NA2 NSX Type R is an experience that ranks among the finest in all of motoring. The V6 engine, with its VTEC crossover, provides two distinct personalities: smooth and tractable below 5800 rpm, then ferociously eager above it. The steering is precise and communicative, the brakes are powerful and fade-resistant, and the overall balance of the car rewards smoothness and commitment. It is a car that makes the driver feel like a hero.
Only approximately 140 NA2 Type R units were produced, all for the Japanese domestic market, making it extraordinarily rare. Combined with the approximately 483 NA1 Type Rs, total NSX Type R production barely exceeds 600 units. Today, the NA2 Type R commands prices that approach or exceed $300,000 for well-documented, low-mileage examples.
Verify the Type R specification through Honda records using the chassis number. Check for any modifications that may have been reversed. The VTEC V6 should transition smoothly at the crossover point. Compression test the engine. The aluminum body should be checked for corrosion and repair quality. The limited production means every car is well-documented. Service records are critical. Championship White is the most iconic color.
