Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance

The Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance, launched for the 2022 model year, represented one of the most delightful surprises in the modern automotive landscape. Without fanfare or extensive pre-launch marketing, Lexus quietly inserted the magnificent 2UR-GSE 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 from the RC F and GS F into the compact IS sedan, creating an understated performance car with the heart of a much more serious machine.

The 2UR-GSE V8 produced 472 horsepower and 395 lb-ft of torque — figures remarkably close to the engines in cars costing twice as much. More importantly, the naturally aspirated delivery and soaring 7,100 rpm power peak created an emotional driving experience that turbocharged competitors simply could not replicate. The engine's dual injection system (D-4S) combined direct and port injection for optimal power and efficiency, while the soundtrack — a deep, cultured roar that intensified toward the redline — was worth the price of admission alone.

What made the IS 500 truly special was its packaging. Rather than creating a full-blown track car like the IS F, Lexus positioned the IS 500 as an F Sport Performance model — essentially a luxury sedan that happened to have a V8 engine. The exterior changes were subtle: quad exhaust tips, a modest rear lip spoiler, unique 19-inch Enkei wheels, and small F Sport Performance badges. From a distance, the IS 500 was virtually indistinguishable from a standard IS 350 F Sport, creating the ultimate sleeper sedan.

The chassis was adapted rather than completely reengineered for the V8. Adaptive Variable Suspension provided adjustable damping across multiple drive modes, while the wider Enkei wheels and staggered tire setup provided excellent grip. The 8-speed automatic transmission shifted with appropriate urgency in Sport+ mode, with well-timed downshift blips adding to the driving experience.

Notably absent was the torque-vectoring differential (TVD) offered on the RC F and GS F. Lexus chose a conventional limited-slip differential instead, saving weight and reducing complexity. In practice, the IS 500 handled well, with the lighter weight of the compact body compensating for the simpler differential through sharper turn-in and more agile direction changes.

The IS 500 arrived at a remarkable price point — significantly less expensive than the discontinued GS F and substantially cheaper than the RC F, despite sharing the same engine. This pricing strategy, combined with the IS sedan's more practical dimensions and sleeper character, made the IS 500 perhaps the best performance value in Lexus's lineup.

As likely one of the last naturally aspirated V8 sedans Lexus will ever produce, the IS 500 has already begun to attract attention from collectors who recognize its significance. In an era of electrification and downsizing, a naturally aspirated V8 in a compact rear-wheel-drive sedan feels increasingly anachronistic — and increasingly special.

As a current model, IS 500s are available through Lexus dealers, though production numbers are limited. The 2UR-GSE engine has proven reliable in RC F and GS F applications. Check for any dealer markup over MSRP. For used examples, verify complete service history with genuine Lexus maintenance. The adaptive dampers should be tested in all modes. Check the 8-speed automatic for smooth operation — the IS 500 uses a conventional automatic rather than a dual-clutch, so shift speed is not its primary focus. Inspect the unique Enkei wheels for curb rash. The IS 500 does not include the TVD found on the RC F/GS F — this is by design, not a deficiency. Matador Red Tinted Mica and Incognito (dark green) are among the most desirable colors.

Built at Toyota's Tahara plant. The IS 500 uses the same 2UR-GSE 5.0-liter V8 found in the RC F and GS F, fitted into the XE30 IS platform. Despite sharing the engine, the IS 500 is positioned below the RC F in Lexus's performance hierarchy, with F Sport Performance rather than full F designation. Production has been limited, with the IS 500 representing a small fraction of overall IS sales. Available exclusively in the US and select markets.
