Lexus IS F Standard
The Lexus IS F was a landmark car for Toyota's luxury division — their first attempt at a dedicated high-performance sedan to rival the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG. Under the subtly bulging hood sat a 5.0-liter 2UR-GSE V8, closely related to the engine in the LS460, producing 416 hp at a screaming 6,600 RPM. The engine featured Toyota's innovative D-4S dual injection system (direct plus port injection) and revved with an enthusiasm that belied its capacity. The 8-speed Sport Direct Shift automatic transmitted power to the rear wheels with lightning-fast shifts in Sport mode. The IS F was also the first Lexus to receive Brembo brakes as standard, and the suspension was a thoroughly reworked version of the standard IS setup with unique geometry and tuning. The exhaust note, particularly on overrun, was deliberately engineered to produce an aggressive crackle that was decidedly un-Lexus. While some critics found the IS F's ride quality harsh and its steering less communicative than the M3's, the car compensated with bulletproof reliability, stunning build quality, and a naturally aspirated V8 experience that would soon become extinct in this segment.
The 2UR-GSE V8 is essentially bulletproof — Toyota/Yamaha engineering at its finest. The 8-speed automatic is reliable but should have fluid changed regularly. Differential oil changes recommended. The Torsen LSD is robust. Check for tire wear — the IS F eats rear tires. No major mechanical concerns — this is a Lexus, after all.
The 2UR-GSE V8 was developed by Yamaha (who have built Toyota's performance engines since the 2000GT). The 8-speed automatic was one of the first in any performance car. A CCS-P (Circuit Club Sport Package) was offered in limited numbers with a carbon fiber spoiler and BBS wheels. Production was modest, with approximately 8,000 worldwide.
