The Ford Performance Vehicles F6 Typhoon stands as one of the most remarkable performance sedans ever produced in Australia. While the FPV GT commanded attention with its supercharged V8, the F6 Typhoon offered a compelling alternative that, for many enthusiasts, was actually the more exciting car to drive. At its heart was Ford Australia's legendary Barra 4.0-liter inline-six, fitted with a Garrett GT3582R turbocharger and intercooler to produce a mighty 270 kilowatts (362 horsepower) and a staggering 565 Nm of torque.

The Barra turbo engine was an engineering tour de force. The iron-block, alloy-head inline-six featured dual overhead camshafts, variable cam timing, and direct injection, making it one of the most technologically advanced turbocharged six-cylinder engines of its era. The torque delivery was enormous and nearly flat across a broad rev range, giving the F6 Typhoon extraordinary flexibility and devastating straight-line performance.

The F6 Typhoon could sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, making it quicker than many dedicated sports cars. More impressively, the enormous torque meant the car pulled relentlessly from any speed in any gear, making overtaking effortless. The soundtrack was equally memorable, with the turbocharged six producing a distinctive whooshing intake note followed by a deep, resonant exhaust tone.

The chassis was specifically calibrated for the Typhoon's unique powertrain characteristics. FPV engineers fitted Brembo four-piston front brakes with 355mm ventilated rotors, sports-tuned suspension with unique spring rates and damper settings, and a limited-slip differential to manage the prodigious torque. The 19-inch alloy wheels were wrapped in high-performance tires to provide adequate grip.

Visually, the F6 Typhoon featured FPV's distinctive front bumper with enlarged air intakes, bonnet scoops, body-colored side skirts, and a subtle boot-lid spoiler. The interior received deeply bolstered Recaro-style sports seats, an FPV-specific instrument cluster with boost gauge, and alcantara trim throughout.

The F6 Typhoon holds a special place in Australian automotive lore as the ultimate expression of the turbocharged straight-six formula. With Ford Australia ceasing manufacturing in 2016, the F6 Typhoon has become an increasingly sought-after collector's item.
