Toyota Celica GT-Four RC (ST185)
The Celica GT-Four RC (Rally Competition) represented Toyota's homologation special for World Rally Championship competition, built to satisfy FIA Group A regulations. Based on the ST185 chassis generation, the GT-Four RC featured the legendary 3S-GTE turbocharged engine in its third generation form, producing 225 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive system featured an active center differential with electronically controlled torque split, complemented by a Torsen limited-slip rear differential. The aggressive widebody design included flared fenders, hood scoop, rear spoiler, and distinctive side air intakes. Suspension featured MacPherson struts with adjustable dampers and stiffer springs than standard GT-Four models. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS provided stopping power. Weight-saving measures included thinner glass and reduced sound deadening. The RC package added a water spray system for the intercooler - a technology lifted directly from the rally cars. Only available in certain markets, particularly Europe and Japan, the GT-Four RC commanded a significant premium over standard models. The ST185 generation famously won the 1992, 1993, and 1994 WRC Manufacturers' Championships with drivers including Carlos Sainz and Juha Kankkunen. The GT-Four RC allowed enthusiasts to own a road-going version of these championship-winning machines.
Verify RC designation on chassis plate and documentation. Should have widebody fenders and hood scoop. Engine code 3S-GTE (third generation). Check AWD system operation - repairs expensive. Transfer case and center differential wear common. Turbocharger life limited - inspect for smoke and noise. Rust common in rear wheel arches behind flares. Accident damage frequent due to rally heritage use. Verify water spray system intact. Many modified - original specification cars worth more. Service history critical - owners who rallied cars often documented maintenance. Import paperwork must be complete. Prices $25,000-$50,000 depending on condition and mileage. RC-specific parts increasingly scarce. Interior wear common. Check for engine modifications - many tuned beyond stock. Proper examples eligible for historic rally events.
