Alfa Romeo 155 GTA

The Alfa Romeo 155, produced from 1992 to 1997, was based on the Fiat Tipo platform but transformed by Alfa Romeo into a distinctly sporty sedan that became one of the most successful touring cars in DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft) history. While the road cars were relatively modest in specification, the 155's racing pedigree gave it an aura of excitement that few rivals could match.

The road-going 155 was available with a range of engines including four-cylinder Twin Spark units and the Alfa Romeo V6 in 2.0 and 2.5-liter forms. The 2.5-liter V6, producing 190 horsepower in naturally aspirated form, was the enthusiast's choice, delivering smooth power and the characterful exhaust note for which Alfa Romeo's V6 engines were famous. A Q4 all-wheel-drive version was available, paired with the 2.0 V6 turbo producing 190 horsepower.

In DTM racing, the 155 was transformed into something extraordinary. Prepared by Alfa Corse with assistance from Dallara, the DTM 155 V6 Ti featured a specially developed 2.5-liter V6 producing over 420 horsepower, driving all four wheels through a sequential gearbox. Nicola Larini won the 1993 DTM championship driving the 155, defeating established German teams and earning the car legendary status.

The road car was styled by I.DE.A Institute, with clean, angular lines that aged better than many of its contemporaries. The interior was well-appointed for its class, with supportive sports seats and a driver-focused dashboard layout. The GTA designation, used on the most sporting variant, connected the 155 to Alfa's illustrious competition heritage.

Special editions included the Silverstone, created to celebrate the DTM success, featuring unique paint, wheels, and trim. The Q4 all-wheel-drive version addressed the front-wheel-drive platform's torque-steer tendencies while adding all-weather capability.

The 155 is increasingly recognized as an affordable classic that offers genuine Alfa Romeo character in a practical sedan package. Well-maintained V6 examples are becoming scarce, and the best survivors are appreciating as enthusiasts discover the charm of this underrated model.

V6 versions are most desirable. Check for rust in wheel arches, sills, and floor pans. The V6 engine is generally reliable but the timing chain requires inspection. Q4 versions have more complex drivetrain requiring specialist attention. Front-drive V6 models can exhibit torque steer. Electrical systems can be problematic. Interior trim wears with age. Good examples are becoming scarce.

Based on the Fiat Tipo platform. Available with 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 four-cylinder Twin Spark engines, plus 2.0 V6 turbo and 2.5 V6 naturally aspirated. Q4 AWD available with 2.0 turbo. Won the 1993 DTM championship with Nicola Larini. Special editions included Silverstone and Wide Body. Production at Pomigliano d'Arco plant.
