Dodge Dart GTS 340

The Dodge Dart GTS 340 was the thinking man's muscle car. While competitors were loading big-block engines into heavy intermediates, the Dart took a different approach — a high-revving 340 small-block in Chrysler's lightest A-body platform. The result was a car that could embarrass much more expensive muscle cars at the dragstrip while being practical enough for daily driving. The 340 V8 was one of the best engines Chrysler ever built — it breathed freely, revved eagerly, and responded beautifully to modification. With only 3,100 pounds to push, the GTS ran mid-14s in stock form and could easily dip into the 13s with basic bolt-ons. The Dart's affordable price, light weight, and bulletproof drivetrain made it a favorite among budget racers.

$25,000 – $55,000

GTS models with the 340 are the sweet spot — affordable to buy and maintain with excellent performance. 383 big-block cars are rarer but heavier. Watch for A-body rust in lower quarters and trunk. The 340 engine is well-supported by the aftermarket. The A833 4-speed is one of the best transmissions Chrysler ever made.

The GTS was available 1968-1969 on the A-body platform. The 340ci V8 was specifically designed as a high-performance small-block. A 383ci big-block was also available. The 1968 Hemi Dart (383/440/Hemi conversions done at Hurst) are extremely rare drag-racing specials.
