Honda Civic Type R FL5
The FL5 Honda Civic Type R, launched in 2022, is the culmination of decades of Type R development. Built in Japan for the first time since the FD2, the FL5 is widely regarded as the most complete Civic Type R ever made, combining the ferocious performance of its predecessors with a level of refinement and daily livability that makes it one of the most versatile performance cars available at any price.
The K20C1 engine returns from the FK8, but with meaningful updates that lift output to 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Revised intake and exhaust porting, an optimized turbocharger, and updated engine management improve both peak performance and throttle response. The engine feels sharper and more immediate than the FK8's, with the VTEC crossover providing a noticeable increase in aggression as revs climb. The 7,000 rpm redline remains, and the engine pulls strongly right to the limiter.
The six-speed manual gearbox has been revised with shorter throws, a lighter flywheel, and improved rev-matching capability. The shift action is widely considered the best in any front-wheel-drive car, with mechanical precision and satisfying weight that make every gear change a small pleasure. The helical limited-slip differential continues to manage torque steer effectively, allowing the FL5 to deploy its considerable power without drama.
The FL5's chassis represents significant evolution over the FK8. The longer wheelbase (2,735mm versus 2,700mm) improves stability, while revised front and rear suspension geometry enhances both turn-in response and mid-corner composure. The dual-axis front suspension returns with refinements, and the multilink rear has been retuned for better compliance over rough surfaces while maintaining sharp body control during aggressive driving.
The most striking change from the FK8 is the FL5's visual restraint. Gone are the excessive vents, fake mesh, and aggressive body extensions. In their place is a cleaner, more mature design that suggests confidence rather than aggression. The rear wing remains functional and prominent, but the overall aesthetic is more cohesive and less divisive than its predecessor. This design maturity has won the FL5 praise from critics who felt the FK8 tried too hard visually.
Inside, the FL5 benefits from the eleventh-generation Civic's excellent cabin architecture. The digital instrument cluster is configurable and includes a prominent gear position and rev counter. The seats, developed by Honda and upholstered in Alcantara and fabric, provide excellent support during spirited driving while remaining comfortable for daily commuting. Material quality throughout the cabin is a marked improvement over previous Type Rs.
The FL5 set a Suzuka Circuit lap record for front-wheel-drive production cars, confirming its performance credentials on one of the world's most demanding circuits. On the road, it is simultaneously more exciting and more livable than any previous Type R. The three-mode adaptive damper system provides a genuine transformation between comfortable daily driving and track-focused aggression, making the FL5 one of the few performance cars that is equally enjoyable on a commute and on a track day.
The FL5 Civic Type R represents a maturation of the Type R philosophy. Where previous generations sometimes felt raw and uncompromising, the FL5 proves that refinement and excitement are not mutually exclusive. It is the Type R that answers the criticism of every previous version while losing none of the essential character that makes the Type R badge special.
The FL5 is a current production car, so mechanical concerns are minimal. Check for dealer markup documentation, as many were sold above MSRP. Verify complete service history. Check for any aftermarket modifications that might affect warranty coverage. The manual-only gearbox means every FL5 has the correct transmission. Paint protection film on the front end is advisable due to stone chip vulnerability. Verify all recall campaigns have been completed.
The FL5 Type R is manufactured at Honda's Yorii plant in Saitama, Japan - marking the return of Type R production to Japan after the UK-built FN2 and FK2, and the UK/USA-built FK8. Global production is managed to maintain exclusivity, with allocation-based distribution in most markets.
