BMW M4 CSL G82

The BMW M4 CSL, launched in 2022 with production limited to 1,000 units worldwide, represents the most extreme factory-built M4 in the nameplate's history. The CSL designation — Coupe Sport Lightweight — pays direct homage to the legendary 3.0 CSL 'Batmobile' that dominated European touring car racing in the 1970s, and BMW M Division has taken that heritage seriously with a car that prioritizes weight reduction and track performance above all else.

The S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine receives significant upgrades for CSL duty. Output rises to 543 horsepower — 40 hp more than the M4 Competition — through revised turbocharger internals, higher boost pressure, a lighter crankshaft, and a recalibrated engine management system. The engine's response is sharper, its power delivery more urgent, and its willingness to rev beyond 7,000 rpm more pronounced than in any other S58 application.

Weight reduction is comprehensive. The rear seats are deleted entirely. Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) replaces steel and aluminum in the roof, hood, trunk lid, and front bucket seats. The center console is simplified, sound deadening is reduced, and the exhaust system uses thinner-wall titanium components. The result is a weight saving of approximately 100 kg over the M4 Competition, bringing the curb weight to 1,625 kg — remarkably light for a car of this size and power output.

The chassis receives specific attention. Stiffer front springs, unique rear anti-roll bar settings, and a 8mm lower ride height compared to the M4 Competition create more responsive handling with reduced body roll. The adaptive dampers are recalibrated for greater precision, and the rear-wheel-drive configuration — there is no xDrive option — ensures maximum driver involvement.

Visually, the CSL makes a strong statement. A fixed carbon fiber rear wing, unique kidney grille design with red accents, specific front bumper with larger air intakes, and the deletion of the standard car's powered mirrors create a purposeful appearance. The laser headlights with their yellow accents are a direct reference to BMW's endurance racing cars. Only two colors are available: Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic and Alpine White.

The M4 CSL uses an 8-speed M Steptronic automatic transmission — no manual option is available. BMW's reasoning is that the automatic's shift speed and launch control capability better serve the car's track-focused mission. While purists may lament the absence of a manual option, the transmission's behavior in aggressive driving modes is impressively quick and decisive.

At the Nurburgring Nordschleife, the M4 CSL set a 7:20.207 lap time — the fastest ever for a BMW production car and faster than many mid-engine supercars. This achievement validated BMW M's approach: that a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe with a turbocharged six-cylinder engine could match the absolute performance of far more exotic machinery.

With only 1,000 units, verify production number and authenticity through BMW Individual records. Check for track use damage — inspect brake disc thickness, suspension component condition, and look for curbing damage. The S58 engine is relatively new and proven reliable in Competition specification. Verify all carbon fiber components are original and undamaged. Low-mileage examples in Frozen Brooklyn Grey command the highest premiums. Check that all factory documentation and accessories are present.

Limited to 1,000 units worldwide for 2022-2023. Available only with 8-speed M Steptronic automatic and rear-wheel drive. Only two colors offered: Frozen Brooklyn Grey Metallic and Alpine White. Each car individually numbered. The CSL achieved a 7:20.207 Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time, the fastest for any BMW production car.
