BMW M3 E92 GTS
The BMW M3 GTS, produced in a limited run of just 135 units in 2010, represented BMW M Division's most extreme interpretation of the E92 M3. Designed primarily for track use but fully road-legal, the GTS combined significant weight reduction with increased engine displacement and power, creating a car that bridged the gap between the standard M3 and a full racing machine.
The S65 V8 engine — already one of the most characterful engines in the M3's history — was bored out from 4.0 to 4.4 liters, increasing output from 414 to 450 horsepower. The redline climbed to 8,300 rpm, and the engine's willingness to rev combined with its naturally aspirated character produced one of the most intoxicating soundtracks in modern automotive history. The characteristic V8 wail, hardened by the titanium-tipped exhaust system, was unmistakably special.
Weight reduction was pursued aggressively. The rear seats were removed and replaced with a half roll cage. The front seats were replaced with lightweight racing buckets. Sound deadening was stripped. The boot floor was replaced with a carbon fiber panel, and a carbon fiber roof was fitted. Even the air conditioning was deleted (available as a free option for those who insisted). The result was a weight saving of approximately 70 kg over the standard M3 — significant enough to transform the car's character.
The suspension was completely reworked for the GTS. Fixed-rate coilover dampers replaced the standard car's electronically controlled units, with stiffer springs and revised geometry optimized for circuit use. The ride height was lowered by 15mm. A more aggressive front splitter and adjustable rear wing improved aerodynamic balance at high speeds. The standard 19-inch wheels wore Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires — semi-slick rubber that provided extraordinary grip on dry surfaces.
The M-DCT dual-clutch gearbox was the only transmission offered, its shift speed perfectly suited to the GTS's track-focused mission. Gear changes occurred with violent rapidity, each shift accompanied by a bark from the exhaust as the engine management briefly cut ignition. On circuit, this transmission allowed the driver to keep both hands on the wheel through complex corner sequences while still executing perfectly timed downshifts.
The GTS was offered exclusively in Fire Orange over a black Alcantara interior — there were no options for individualization beyond the air conditioning. This singular specification reinforced the car's purpose: it was not about luxury or personal expression, but about distilling the M3 experience to its purest competitive essence.
At the Nurburgring Nordschleife, the M3 GTS set a lap time of 7 minutes 48 seconds — remarkable for a naturally aspirated four-door-chassis car. But the real magic of the GTS was not measured in lap times or specifications. It was in the sensation of the S65 V8 screaming past 8,000 rpm, the precise placement of each corner, and the absolute confidence inspired by a chassis that communicated every nuance of the tarmac below. Only 135 owners would ever experience this, making the M3 GTS one of BMW's most exclusive and sought-after modern products.
With only 135 examples, verify authenticity through BMW Individual records. Check for roll cage mounting point integrity and signs of track abuse (worn brake discs, bent suspension components, repaired bodywork). The S65 V8 has known rod bearing issues — check service history for preventive bearing replacement. Inspect carbon fiber roof and boot floor for damage. Verify original Fire Orange paint and complete interior specification. Low-mileage examples command significant premiums. European market only — check import documentation for any cars found outside original markets.
Only 135 M3 GTS units were produced for 2010. The car was not officially sold in the USA. The 4.4-liter S65B44 engine was unique to the GTS and CRT models. All cars were finished in Fire Orange with black Alcantara interior. The M3 CRT (Carbon Racing Technology) sedan was a related limited edition of 67 units. The GTS was homologated for GT4-class racing.
