Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Evolution IV CN9A
The 1997 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV represented a quantum leap in rally-bred technology with the introduction of Active Yaw Control (AYC), an innovative rear differential system that actively distributed torque between rear wheels for unprecedented handling precision. The proven 4G63 turbocharged engine produced 280 horsepower (Japanese limit) with significantly improved mid-range torque. Combined with revised suspension geometry, Brembo brakes, and Recaro bucket seats, the Evo IV delivered supercar-level performance in a compact sedan package. Its dominance in WRC competition and street credibility cemented the Evolution's reputation as the ultimate driver's car.
Verify AYC system functions properly as repairs are expensive. Check turbocharger condition and intercooler for damage. Look for evidence of rally use or hard driving. Rust common in rear quarter panels and floor pans. Many have been modified so finding stock examples is rare. Transfer case and AYC differential require specialized maintenance.
Built at Mitsubishi's Mizushima plant. The Evolution IV was produced for just two years with approximately 6,600 units. All were JDM-only with right-hand drive and the 280 hp limit.
