Ferrari 166 Inter Touring Barchetta

The Ferrari 166 Inter occupies a singular place in automotive history as the car that truly launched Ferrari as a manufacturer of road-going automobiles. While the 125 S and 166 MM were primarily competition machines, the 166 Inter was conceived from the outset as a gentleman's grand tourer, designed to be driven on public roads in comfort and style, albeit with thoroughbred racing DNA coursing through its mechanical veins.

Introduced at the 1948 Turin Motor Show, the 166 Inter was bodied by a variety of Italy's most prestigious coachbuilders, including Touring, Vignale, Ghia, and Stabilimenti Farina. Each example was essentially hand-built to the buyer's specifications, making every 166 Inter a unique creation. The Touring Barchetta body style, with its flowing lines and minimalist elegance, became perhaps the most iconic interpretation, though the elegant coupes by Vignale and Ghia were equally stunning.

At the heart of the 166 Inter lay Gioacchino Colombo's masterful V12 engine, displacing just under two liters yet producing 110 horsepower in road trim. This diminutive powerplant, with its single overhead camshaft per bank and single Weber carburetor, was remarkably smooth and willing to rev, characteristics that would define Ferrari engines for decades to come. The engine was mated to a five-speed non-synchromesh gearbox that demanded skill and attention from its driver.

The chassis was a simple but effective tubular steel frame with independent front suspension using double wishbones and a transverse leaf spring, while the rear employed a live axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. By modern standards the setup was rudimentary, but in the context of the late 1940s it offered excellent handling and ride quality, particularly given the car's remarkably light weight of approximately 850 kilograms.

Only 37 examples of the 166 Inter were produced between 1948 and 1950, making it one of the rarest Ferraris in existence. The car established the template that Ferrari would follow for years to come: a front-mounted V12 engine, rear-wheel drive, and bodywork by Italy's finest coachbuilders. It also established Ferrari's business model of selling road cars to wealthy enthusiasts in order to fund the Scuderia's racing programs.

Today, the 166 Inter is among the most coveted of all Ferraris, representing the very genesis of the marque's road car lineage. The few surviving examples are treasured by collectors and institutions worldwide, with values reflecting their extraordinary historical significance. Each car tells a unique story, shaped by the individual coachbuilder's vision and the original owner's specifications.
