Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
The 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat shattered conventions about what a four-door sedan could be. With 707 horsepower from its supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8, it was certified as the most powerful sedan in the world, capable of performance that put genuine supercars on notice while carrying four adults in leather-lined comfort.
The 6,166cc supercharged Hemi V8, designated the Hellcat engine, was a technical tour de force of American big-block engineering. The 2.4-liter IHI twin-screw supercharger force-fed the engine at up to 11.6 psi of boost, producing 707 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 650 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. The engine featured forged steel connecting rods, sodium-filled exhaust valves, and a high-capacity cooling system to handle the enormous heat generation.
The eight-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission was the sole gearbox option in the Charger Hellcat (unlike the Challenger, which offered a manual). The transmission was calibrated for lightning-fast upshifts in Sport and Track modes, and its wide ratio spread provided both strong acceleration and relaxed highway cruising. Launch control was standard, managing engine speed and torque application for repeatable, maximum-effort launches.
Performance figures were astounding for a vehicle weighing over 4,500 pounds. Zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, the quarter mile in 11.0 seconds at 126 mph, and a top speed of 204 mph made the Charger Hellcat faster than many purpose-built sports cars. The SRT Active Damping Suspension allowed drivers to select from multiple modes that ranged from comfortable daily driving to race-track firmness.
Dodge cleverly included several features that acknowledged the car's extreme nature. Two key fobs were provided: a red one that unlocked the full 707 horsepower, and a black one that limited output to 500 horsepower for valets or less experienced drivers. The Performance Pages display in the infotainment system provided real-time data including 0-60 times, G-forces, and quarter-mile performance.
The Charger Hellcat was essentially a full-size luxury sedan with the heart of a supercar. The interior featured the full Uconnect infotainment system, leather and suede seats with aggressive bolstering, a heated steering wheel, and all the comfort features expected of a premium Dodge. It could commute to work, collect groceries, and take the family on vacation — then demolish a drag strip on the weekend.
The Hellcat phenomenon became a cultural event, transcending the traditional muscle car community to attract attention from the mainstream media, social media, and buyers who had never considered a Dodge before. It proved that American manufacturers could still produce outrageous, no-compromises performance cars that captured the imagination of enthusiasts worldwide.
The Charger SRT Hellcat stands as one of the most significant American performance cars of the modern era, a four-door sedan that redefined what was possible and desirable in a production automobile.
The supercharged Hemi is generally reliable but verify cooling system health as supercharger heat is substantial. Check the supercharger for bearing noise. Inspect the transmission for proper shifting behavior. These cars are frequently modified — verify if modifications void the warranty. Check for drag launch abuse: worn tires, stressed axle shafts, and transmission issues. Verify both key fobs are present.
Assembled at Chrysler's Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada. The supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi was assembled at the Saltillo Engine Plant. Each engine was hand-finished with the supercharger assembly requiring specialized tooling.
