Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec (BNR32)

The 1989 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec (BNR32) represented the ultimate expression of the R32 GT-R, incorporating lessons learned from Nissan's devastatingly successful touring car racing program into a road car of even greater capability. The V-Spec designation, standing for Victory Specification, signified a package of upgrades that enhanced both performance and the driving experience.

The V-Spec retained the standard R32 GT-R's RB26DETT engine, producing the same officially quoted 280 horsepower. Where it differed was in the chassis and drivetrain refinements that made the car more capable at the limits of adhesion. The ATTESA E-TS system was upgraded to the Pro specification, which added an active limited-slip center differential that provided more precise torque distribution between front and rear axles.

The braking system received a significant upgrade with Brembo calipers replacing the standard Sumitomo units. These provided improved stopping power and better fade resistance during aggressive driving, a direct response to feedback from racing teams. The wheels were upgraded to lightweight BBS mesh items that reduced unsprung weight and improved the car's responsive feel.

The suspension was retuned for the V-Spec application, with revised spring rates and damper settings that provided a slightly more aggressive setup than the standard GT-R. The electronically adjustable dampers retained their ability to switch between comfort and sport modes, but both modes were calibrated to be firmer than those on the base car.

The V-Spec also benefited from a limited-slip rear differential with a more aggressive lockup ratio, improving traction out of corners and providing more predictable power-down behavior. Combined with the upgraded ATTESA E-TS Pro system, this gave the V-Spec a perceptibly more planted, more controllable feel during aggressive driving.

Visually, the V-Spec was distinguished by its BBS wheels, Brembo brake calipers visible through the wheel spokes, and V-Spec badging on the rear. These were subtle distinctions, in keeping with the GT-R's philosophy of understated performance, but they were immediately recognizable to enthusiasts.

The driving experience of the V-Spec was a refinement of the already excellent standard GT-R. The improved ATTESA system provided even more seamless torque transfer, making the car feel more planted and more predictable in transitions. The Brembo brakes inspired greater confidence under hard braking, and the overall package felt more cohesive and more thoroughly developed.

The V-Spec was produced in limited numbers compared to the standard R32 GT-R, making it more desirable among collectors. Today, V-Spec examples command a significant premium over standard R32 GT-Rs, reflecting both their enhanced specification and their relative rarity. The V-Spec represents the definitive iteration of the R32 GT-R, the version that most completely realized Nissan's vision for the revived GT-R nameplate.
