Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R
The Mitsubishi Starion (marketed as Conquest in some regions) was Japan's turbocharged answer to the Porsche 944. The distinctive wedge-shaped coupe featured pop-up headlights and aggressive box-flared fenders. Power came from the 2.6-liter 4G63 turbocharged inline-four initially, later switched to the 2.0-liter version for most markets. The intercooled turbo produced 188 hp and 217 lb-ft, delivering genuine sports car performance. Advanced features included electronic fuel injection, limited-slip differential, and four-wheel disc brakes. The ESI-R variant represented the highest performance specification with wide-body styling and enhanced suspension. Rear-wheel drive with near-perfect weight distribution provided excellent handling dynamics. The Starion succeeded in racing, particularly in Group A touring car competition. Despite strong performance and unique character, it was overshadowed by the RX-7 and Supra. Today, clean examples are increasingly appreciated for their distinctive styling and turbocharged rear-drive thrills.
Wide-body ESI-R models are most desirable. Verify turbo condition - listen for bearing noise and check for smoke. Head gasket condition is critical. Check carefully for rust, especially in flared fenders. Original cars preferable to modified examples. Service history important for turbo longevity. Intercooled models are better than non-intercooled. Manual transmission much preferable to automatic. Values are rising as 1980s turbo cars gain appreciation.
