Ford Mustang Fastback GT

The 1967 model year brought the Mustang's first major redesign, and the results were stunning. Wider, lower, and more aggressive than the 1965-66 cars, the '67 Mustang finally looked like it could back up its performance pretensions. The Fastback body style benefited most from the redesign, gaining a more flowing roofline and muscular rear haunches that gave it a predatory stance.

The most significant mechanical change was the widened engine bay, which could now accommodate Ford's FE-series big-block V8s. The 390 GT, with its 320 horsepower and 427 lb-ft of torque, transformed the Mustang from a spirited performer into a genuine muscle car. The big-block's low-end grunt was intoxicating, making stoplight-to-stoplight runs effortless.

The GT Equipment Group for 1967-68 included fog lamps mounted in the grille, GT side stripes with 'C-stripes' on the bodyside, dual exhaust, front disc brakes, a pop-open fuel cap, and a special handling package. The GT was an appearance and equipment package rather than a separate model, but it became the most recognized Mustang designation.

The concave rear tail light panel, shared across all 1967-68 Mustang body styles, became one of the most iconic design elements in automotive history. The sequential turn signals — where the tail lights illuminated from inside to outside — added a theatrical touch that delighted onlookers and has been revived on modern Mustangs.

Inside, the 1967 redesign brought a more cohesive dashboard design with deeply recessed instruments and available tilt-away steering column. The optional Interior Decor Group added brushed aluminum dash trim and upgraded seat materials. Build quality improved noticeably over the earlier cars.

The 1967-68 Fastback remains one of the most sought-after classic Mustangs, its reputation burnished by Steve McQueen's Highland Green '68 Fastback in the legendary car chase from Bullitt.

The 1967-68 Mustangs are among the most counterfeited classic cars — verify VIN decoding carefully. Big-block cars are worth significantly more than small-blocks. Check shock towers for rust and stress cracks. Inner fender aprons rot in the battery tray area. Inspect convertible models for structural integrity. The S-code 390 GT and R-code 428 Cobra Jet are the most valuable variants. Original Deluxe interior trim is desirable and difficult to find in good condition.

1967 was the first year for the big-block engine option in the Mustang. Total Mustang production dropped from over 600K to 472K as the muscle car wars heated up and competitors like the Camaro entered the market. The 1968 model brought federally mandated side marker lights and the Cobra Jet 428 engine mid-year.
