Land Rover Defender V8 5.0 Supercharged
The Land Rover Defender V8, introduced in 2022 for the new-generation L663 Defender, answered the prayers of enthusiasts who wanted the raw excitement of a V8 engine in the modern Defender's remarkably capable package. It combined the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine from the Range Rover Sport SVR with the Defender's class-leading off-road hardware.
With 518 bhp and 625 Nm of torque channelled through an eight-speed automatic gearbox and permanent all-wheel drive, the Defender V8 delivered genuinely startling performance. The 0-60 mph sprint took just 5.0 seconds — remarkable for a vehicle designed primarily for off-road use — while the top speed reached 149 mph. A bespoke exhaust system provided an appropriately muscular soundtrack.
Land Rover's engineers tuned the Defender V8's chassis specifically for the additional power. The suspension was retuned with unique spring rates and damper settings, while the Electronic Active Differential with Torque Vectoring by Braking improved handling on paved surfaces. A new Dynamic driving mode was added to the Terrain Response 2 system, giving the V8 a more rear-biased torque distribution for enthusiastic on-road driving.
Despite the performance focus, the Defender V8 retained every element of the standard Defender's off-road capability. The Terrain Response 2 system, ClearSight Ground View camera, Wade Sensing, and configurable terrain modes ensured it could tackle serious off-road terrain. The combination of massive power and sophisticated off-road electronics created a vehicle that could traverse a mountain trail in the morning and keep pace with sports cars on a motorway in the afternoon.
Visual distinctions included unique 22-inch alloy wheels, quad exhaust tips, V8 badging, and exclusive satin-finish bonnet and tailgate appliques. The interior featured unique upholstery with contrast stitching and Ebony Windsor leather.
The Defender V8 was initially available only as the short-wheelbase 90, though a 110 version followed. It represented a limited production run as the 5.0-litre V8 was phased out of the JLR engine lineup.
For many enthusiasts, the Defender V8 represents the ultimate modern Defender — a vehicle that captures the spirit of the original while delivering levels of performance and technology that Maurice Wilks could never have imagined.
As a relatively new model, condition should be excellent. Check for any signs of off-road abuse — inspect underbody, suspension components, and wheels. The supercharged V8 is well-proven but check for oil consumption and supercharger whine. Tyre wear is rapid given the power and weight. The adaptive suspension should be tested on various surfaces. Electronic systems should all function correctly. Full JLR service history is essential. The V8 model's limited production may support values long-term. Running costs are high — expect 17-20 mpg and expensive servicing. Insurance costs are significant.
