Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II

The Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II represents the culmination of Mercedes' DTM (German Touring Car Championship) development and stands as one of the most collectible modern Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Built to homologate components for DTM racing, the Evo II featured dramatically revised aerodynamics including a massive adjustable rear wing, deep front spoiler, and widened fenders. These components generated significant downforce while creating one of the most visually striking sedans ever produced.

Under the hood, the Cosworth-developed M102 inline-four engine was enlarged to 2.5 liters and extensively modified with a revised cylinder head, higher compression ratio, and optimized intake and exhaust systems. The result was 235 horsepower at a screaming 7,200 rpm, delivered with remarkable smoothness for a four-cylinder. The rev-happy nature and distinctive exhaust note made the Evo II feel more like a race car than a luxury sedan.

The chassis received comprehensive upgrades including a limited-slip differential, sport suspension with adjustable dampers, larger brakes, and wider wheels and tires. The combination created phenomenal handling capabilities with precise steering and excellent balance. Inside, Recaro sport seats, special instrumentation, and unique trim distinguished the Evo II from standard 190E models, though it retained air conditioning and power accessories for daily usability.

Only 502 examples were produced to meet homologation requirements, making the Evo II extraordinarily rare. In DTM racing, the 190E competed successfully against BMW M3s, winning multiple championships. Today, the Evolution II is highly sought after by collectors, with values having increased dramatically. Pristine examples now command over $300,000, representing significant appreciation from the original $75,000 price. The Evo II's combination of dramatic styling, racing pedigree, and extreme rarity makes it one of the ultimate 1990s collectibles.
