Volvo 1800ES Standard
The Volvo 1800ES was the final evolution of Volvo's beloved P1800 sports car series, and it might be the most desirable of all. The ES (for Estate, or Sport) replaced the 1800E coupe's fastback roofline with a dramatic glass tailgate that created a unique shooting brake profile. The result was one of the most beautiful estate-influenced cars ever produced — a design so striking that it directly influenced the Reliant Scimitar GTE. The 1800ES used the same B20E fuel-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder as the 1800E, producing 135 horsepower with Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection — advanced technology for 1971. The large glass tailgate opened to reveal a flat load area with the rear seat folded, making the 1800ES genuinely practical. Four-wheel disc brakes, a four-speed manual with overdrive, and Volvo's renowned build quality completed a package that was sophisticated, stylish, and usable as daily transport. Sadly, US safety regulations threatened to require visible bumper impact absorbers that would have ruined the 1800ES's clean lines, and Volvo decided to end production rather than compromise the design. Only 8,077 were built, making the 1800ES one of the most collectible Volvos.
Rust is the main enemy — check sills, front chassis rails, and around the rear wheel arches. The B20E engine is extremely reliable and parts are plentiful through Volvo's excellent classic parts program. The frameless glass tailgate seal must be perfect to prevent water intrusion. Overdrive should engage smoothly. The 1800ES is rising in value and good examples are becoming scarce.
Only 8,077 1800ES models were produced over just two model years (1972-1973). Production ended because US bumper regulations would have required unsightly additions. The glass tailgate was frameless, a remarkable engineering achievement.
