Jensen FF Mk I

The Jensen FF (Ferguson Formula) was one of the most technologically significant cars of the 20th century. Outwardly nearly identical to the Jensen Interceptor — sharing its stunning Vignale-designed body — the FF concealed two revolutionary technologies beneath its skin. First, it was the world's first production car equipped with permanent four-wheel drive, using the Ferguson Formula system developed by Harry Ferguson Research. The system used a central transfer case with a viscous coupling that continuously distributed torque between front and rear axles, providing exceptional traction in all conditions. Second, the FF was the first production car fitted with anti-lock brakes, using the Dunlop Maxaret system originally developed for aircraft. These two technologies, now standard on virtually every modern car, appeared in the Jensen FF a full 14 years before the Audi Quattro popularized AWD and decades before ABS became commonplace. The FF was identifiable from the standard Interceptor by its slightly longer wheelbase, a subtle extra crease in the front fender, and twin fuel fillers. Only 320 examples were built, making it far rarer than the Interceptor and increasingly recognized as a landmark automobile.

$100,000 – $300,000

The Ferguson AWD system is the car's most critical component — ensure it functions correctly. The Maxaret anti-lock braking system requires specialist knowledge. Chrysler V8 engine and TorqueFlite transmission are well-supported. Body corrosion is common and expensive to repair. Ensure the car is a genuine FF, not a converted Interceptor — check wheelbase measurement (4 inches longer than Interceptor).

Only 320 FF models were produced, compared to over 6,400 standard Interceptors. The AWD system added significant cost and complexity. The Dunlop Maxaret ABS was a mechanical system adapted from aircraft landing gear technology.
