Toyota GR86 Premium

The Toyota GR86 represents the second generation of Toyota's collaboration with Subaru to create an affordable, lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car. Launched in 2022, the GR86 addressed the most significant criticism of the original 86 - its perceived lack of low-end torque - with a larger 2.4-liter boxer engine that transformed the car from a willing but sometimes frustrating performer into a genuinely quick and engaging sports car.

The FA24 engine, a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated horizontally opposed four-cylinder, produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. While these figures are not headline-grabbing, they represent a 32-horsepower increase over the first generation and, more importantly, a significant improvement in torque across the rev range. The torque dip between 3,500 and 4,500 rpm that plagued the original car has been eliminated, making the GR86 more responsive and enjoyable in everyday driving.

The six-speed manual gearbox is the heart of the GR86 experience. Its short, precise throws and perfectly weighted clutch create one of the most satisfying manual transmission experiences available in a modern car. A six-speed automatic is also available for those who prefer it, but the manual is the enthusiast's choice and the transmission that best suits the car's character. A Torsen limited-slip differential ensures that power reaches both rear wheels effectively.

The chassis builds on the first generation's excellent foundation, with a lower center of gravity than almost any other car on the market thanks to the horizontally opposed engine layout. The front MacPherson struts and rear double-wishbone suspension have been revised with new geometry and stiffer bushings that improve body control without significantly degrading ride quality. The GR86's handling is neutral and predictable, with easy-to-access oversteer that makes it one of the most enjoyable cars to drive at the limit.

The GR86 weighs just 1,270 kg in manual form, making it one of the lightest sports cars available. This low weight contributes to everything the car does well: acceleration feels strong, braking is impressive, and the car changes direction with an eagerness that heavier vehicles cannot match. The lightweight construction also means the car is easy on tires and brakes, making it an affordable platform for track day use.

The interior is functional and focused. Two front seats provide adequate comfort and support, while the rear seats are vestigial, suitable only for small children or additional luggage. The instrument cluster features a digital tachometer with a prominent shift light, and the infotainment system includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Track-friendly features like a comprehensive performance display and adjustable vehicle dynamics are standard.

The GR86 has been lauded by automotive journalists and enthusiasts as one of the best driver's cars available at any price. Its combination of naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission, rear-wheel drive, limited-slip differential, and lightweight construction is virtually unique in the modern automotive landscape. It represents a philosophy of driving enjoyment through simplicity rather than technology, and its affordability makes that philosophy accessible to a wide audience.

The FA24 engine is new but has proven reliable so far. Check for valve spring recall compliance (applicable to early production cars). The six-speed manual is the preferred specification. Check clutch pedal feel and engagement point. Inspect for track use evidence including worn tires, brake dust accumulation, and curbed wheels. Original paint condition is important. The GR86 is a current production car, so parts availability is not a concern. Verify all safety recall campaigns have been completed.

The GR86 is manufactured at Subaru's Ota plant in Gunma, Japan, alongside its Subaru BRZ twin. The car carries the GR (Gazoo Racing) badge, reflecting Toyota's motorsport division's involvement in its development. Special editions have included various limited-run color and equipment packages.
