Daihatsu Copen L880K

The Daihatsu Copen proved that a kei car could be genuinely desirable. This tiny roadster, just 3,395mm long, featured a fully electric retractable aluminum hardtop — the smallest in the world — that folded into the trunk in just 20 seconds. Under the rounded, retro-styled bonnet sat a turbocharged 660cc four-cylinder engine producing the kei car maximum of 64 hp (Japanese regulations capped kei cars at 64 hp regardless of actual output). Despite the modest numbers, the Copen's 830 kg weight meant it felt lively and willing, and the turbo engine's broad torque band made city driving effortless. The car's charm lay in its proportions, its jewel-like build quality, and its sheer personality. Every surface was finished with care that belied the Daihatsu badge. The five-speed manual was precise, the steering communicative, and the chassis surprisingly entertaining on twisty roads. Over 70,000 first-generation Copens were built, making it one of the most successful kei sports cars. It found a cult following outside Japan in the UK and Europe where it was sold as a tiny, affordable open-top sports car. The second-generation Copen (2014) continued the formula with interchangeable body panels.

Retractable roof mechanism is the main concern — ensure it operates smoothly. Turbocharged engine reliable if serviced. Very small luggage space with roof down. JDM 660cc models have lower insurance but less power than export 1.3L. Minimal rust issues. Parts available from Daihatsu specialist importers.

First gen (L880K, 2002-2012): 660cc turbo, ~70,000 built. Also sold in UK/Europe with 1.3L engine (87 hp). Second gen (LA400K, 2014-present) with interchangeable body panels.
