Suzuki Alto Works RS/Z
The Suzuki Alto Works RS/Z was the proof that even Japan's diminutive kei car class could produce genuinely exciting driving machines. Weighing just 690 kg and powered by a turbocharged 660cc three-cylinder engine producing the kei car legal maximum of 64 hp, the Alto Works RS/Z offered a power-to-weight ratio that put many larger cars to shame. The 5-speed manual gearbox had a short, precise throw, and the front disc brakes were adequate for the car's modest mass. The driving experience was pure, unadulterated fun — the tiny engine revved freely to its redline, the gearbox demanded constant attention, and the lightweight body darted through traffic and around corners with an agility that larger cars simply couldn't match. The RS/Z designation indicated the sportiest trim, with Recaro-style bucket seats, additional instrumentation, and a close-ratio gearbox. In Japan, the Alto Works was a cult hero — the cheapest way to experience genuine driving pleasure. Today, it represents the essence of the Japanese kei car performance movement, proving that you don't need power to have fun.
JDM import only. Rust check essential — kei cars were often not well-protected. The K6A turbo engine is reliable but needs regular oil changes at short intervals. Verify turbo health. These are tiny cars — not suitable for large drivers. Parts are specific to the JDM market. The 5-speed manual is the enthusiast's choice.
The 64 hp limit was Japan's voluntary kei car power ceiling. Various Alto Works versions were produced from the 1980s through the 2000s. The K6A turbo three-cylinder engine was shared across Suzuki's kei car range. Available in both FWD and AWD configurations.
