Toyota MR2 Mk1

The first-generation Toyota MR2 (Midship Runabout 2-seater) brought affordable mid-engine thrills to the masses. Toyota placed a transversely-mounted 1.6-liter DOHC four-cylinder behind the seats, driving the rear wheels. The 4A-GE engine produced 112 hp (varying by market) and revved freely to 7500 rpm. Lightweight construction achieved a curb weight of just 2,350 lbs with near-perfect weight distribution. The result was razor-sharp handling with minimal body roll and communicative steering. Angular wedge styling with pop-up headlights epitomized 1980s design. Build quality was typical Toyota: excellent fit and finish with outstanding reliability. While not blindingly fast in a straight line, the MR2 excelled on twisty roads where its mid-engine balance and low weight shined. The spartan interior focused on the driver with supportive seats and well-placed controls. The MR2 proved that mid-engine sports cars need not be exotic or expensive. Supercharged models arrived in 1988, adding boost to the already-competent package. Today, clean examples are increasingly collectible as affordable classic sports cars.

Supercharged models command premium prices and offer better performance. Non-sunroof cars are lighter and structurally stiffer. Verify timing belt service history - failures destroy engines. Check for rust in rear suspension areas and floors. Pop-up headlight operation important. Avoid heavily modified or tracked examples unless professional. Original cars increasingly valuable. Manual transmission only practical choice. Strong enthusiast community provides parts and expertise. Values are rising as 1980s Japanese sports cars gain appreciation.
