Ford Mustang II King Cobra

The Ford Mustang II King Cobra arrived in 1978 as the swan song of Ford's controversial second-generation Mustang, a car that enthusiasts loved to hate but which saved the nameplate during the energy crisis. While the Mustang II will never be regarded as a performance icon on par with its predecessor, the King Cobra represented Ford's best effort at creating an exciting sporty car within the severe constraints of 1970s emissions regulations and changing market demands.

When Lee Iacocca green-lit the Mustang II in the early 1970s, he correctly anticipated the fuel crisis that would make the original Mustang's big-block engines impractical. Based on the Ford Pinto platform but significantly upgraded, the Mustang II was smaller, lighter, and more fuel-efficient than the bloated 1971-1973 models it replaced. While purists howled, the Mustang II sold exceptionally well, with over 385,000 units in its first year alone.

The King Cobra package was available only in 1978 and exclusively on the three-door hatchback body style. It was distinguished by its massive cobra hood decal, front and rear spoilers, and dramatic tape stripes along the bodysides. The visual impact was unmistakable and very much in keeping with the late-1970s aesthetic popularized by the Pontiac Trans Am's screaming chicken.

Under the hood, the King Cobra received Ford's 302 cubic inch (5.0L) Windsor V8, rated at 139 horsepower in SAE net terms. While this figure seems modest, it represented the most powerful engine available in any Mustang II and provided genuine improvement over the base 2.3-liter four-cylinder's 88 horsepower. The engine was paired with either a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission.

Beyond the cosmetics, the King Cobra benefited from a comprehensive handling package. Power rack-and-pinion steering improved responsiveness over the standard manual system, while heavy-duty springs and shocks, a larger front anti-roll bar, and raised-white-letter tires on styled steel wheels provided competent cornering ability. The car also received front disc brakes as standard equipment.

Only 4,318 King Cobras were produced during their single year of availability, making them relatively rare today. For years, the Mustang II was dismissed by collectors, but values have been climbing as a new generation discovers these cars. The King Cobra, as the most visually striking and best-equipped variant, has led this reassessment.

The King Cobra also holds historical significance as the bridge between the malaise era and the Fox-body Mustang renaissance that began in 1979. Many of its chassis lessons, particularly the successful use of rack-and-pinion steering and MacPherson strut front suspension, carried forward into the far more celebrated third-generation car.

Verify authenticity through Ford's Marti Auto Works reports. King Cobra-specific parts like the hood decal, front spoiler, and rear spoiler are difficult to source. Check for rust in the subframe connectors, floor pans, and cowl area. The 302 V8 is reliable but ensure it hasn't been replaced with a lesser engine. Automatic cars are more common but manual transmission cars command a premium. The Pinto-derived chassis can develop structural issues if neglected.

The King Cobra was a one-year-only package for 1978, available exclusively on the Mustang II hatchback. Total production was 4,318 units. All King Cobras received the 302 V8 engine. The package was the most expensive Mustang II option at approximately $1,277 over the base hatchback price.
