Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition
The Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition, introduced for 2023, is the most extreme and driver-focused variant of Toyota's remarkable hot hatchback — a car that channels the philosophy of classic Group B rally homologation specials into a modern, road-legal package. Named after 'Morizo,' the racing pseudonym of Toyota president Akio Toyoda, it represents the purest expression of Gazoo Racing's philosophy that motorsport technology should be accessible in production cars.
At the heart of the GR Corolla is the G16E-GTS — a 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine that defies conventional expectations of what a three-cylinder can achieve. Producing 300 hp at 6,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at 3,000-5,550 rpm, it is the most powerful production three-cylinder engine in the world. The specific output of 186 hp per litre is comparable to dedicated sports car engines with twice the displacement. The engine uses both direct and port injection, a ball-bearing turbo, and forged internals.
The GR-Four all-wheel-drive system is the GR Corolla's other technical headline. Rather than a simple all-wheel-drive system biased to the front wheels, GR-Four features a multiplate clutch that allows the driver to select between three torque distribution modes: 60:40 front-to-rear (Normal), 50:50 (Track), and 30:70 (Sport, which is rear-biased). This adjustability transforms the GR Corolla's handling character — from stable understeer in Normal to playful oversteer in Sport mode. Limited-slip differentials at both the front and rear complete the drivetrain.
The Morizo Edition goes further than the standard GR Corolla Core and Circuit editions with weight-saving measures and performance enhancements. The rear seats are deleted (saving approximately 22 kg), an exclusive close-ratio gear set shortens the throws, the suspension is more aggressively tuned, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires replace the standard fitment. A forged carbon fiber roof (on later models), reduced sound deadening, and other detail changes further reduce weight.
The chassis is based on the TNGA-C platform but heavily reinforced for the GR Corolla application. Over 340 additional spot welds, structural adhesive, and bracing throughout the body create a remarkably rigid platform for a hatchback. The double-wishbone rear suspension (unusual in this segment, where most competitors use torsion beams or multilink) contributes to precise handling and excellent traction.
The six-speed manual gearbox is the only transmission option — no automatic is available. It features Toyota's intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) rev-matching system, which can be disabled for purists who prefer heel-and-toe downshifts. The shift feel is mechanical and precise, a key part of the GR Corolla's appeal as a driver's car.
The Morizo Edition is produced in very limited quantities, making it significantly rarer than the standard GR Corolla. Dealer markups have been common, and many buyers face extended waiting lists. Toyota has been gradually increasing production to meet demand, but the Morizo remains a difficult car to acquire at MSRP.
The GR Corolla Morizo Edition represents a remarkable achievement in modern automotive engineering — a car that delivers genuine rally-car-derived performance in a practical hatchback body, powered by the world's most powerful three-cylinder engine, with a manual gearbox and sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. It continues the tradition of rally homologation specials that includes the Celica GT-Four, Mitsubishi Evo, and Subaru WRX STI.
Extremely difficult to acquire at MSRP due to high demand and limited production. Dealer markups of $5,000-15,000 are common. Verify that the car has not been tracked aggressively before purchase. The three-cylinder engine is new technology — long-term reliability data is limited. Check for clutch wear if the car has been driven hard. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires wear quickly in normal driving. Ensure all GR-Four system modes function correctly. Core and Circuit editions offer most of the Morizo's performance with rear seats intact.
In production since 2023. Morizo Edition is the most limited variant — exact production numbers not disclosed but estimated at a few hundred per year for the US market. Built at Toyota's Motomachi plant. Named after Akio Toyoda's racing pseudonym 'Morizo.' Also available in Core and Circuit editions with the same engine but different equipment levels.
