Hyundai Kona N Performance
The Hyundai Kona N, produced from 2021 to 2023, was one of the most unexpected and delightful performance vehicles of its era. By fitting the N division's proven 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and bespoke 8-speed wet DCT into the compact Kona crossover body, Hyundai created a vehicle that combined the elevated driving position and practicality of a small SUV with genuine hot hatch performance.
The powertrain was shared with the Veloster N and i30 N, producing 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque. The 8-speed wet DCT was the only transmission offered, including all the N-specific features: N Grin Shift for temporary overboost, N Power Shift for uninterrupted upshifts, and N Track Sense Shift for automatic gear selection on track. A front-wheel-drive-only layout kept weight in check and simplified the drivetrain.
Despite its crossover proportions, the Kona N was dynamically accomplished. An electronic limited-slip differential managed power distribution between the front wheels, while the multi-link rear suspension (upgraded from the standard Kona's torsion beam) provided composed handling. The variable-ratio steering was well-weighted and direct, and the adaptive dampers offered a genuine range between comfort and sport.
The Kona N's styling was unabashedly aggressive. A large front air intake, extended side skirts, a dual-wing rear spoiler, and quad exhaust tips left no doubt about the car's performance intentions. The Performance Blue paint became the signature color, though several other shades were available. Inside, sport bucket seats with integrated headrests, an N-specific steering wheel, and aluminum pedals created a focused environment.
The active variable exhaust system produced a convincing soundtrack for a front-wheel-drive four-cylinder, with pops and crackles on overrun that added to the driving experience. The sound was generated partly through the exhaust valve system and partly through speakers, but the result was entertaining rather than artificial.
The Kona N was discontinued when the second-generation Kona arrived without an N variant, making the original a one-generation special. This, combined with its genuinely fun driving character and practical SUV body, has given it immediate cult status among performance car enthusiasts who appreciate vehicles that combine spirit with everyday usability.
The Kona N represented the N division's willingness to experiment with unconventional vehicle types. While purists may have questioned the concept of a performance crossover, the execution was so well-judged that it won over even the most skeptical critics.
Same powertrain as Veloster N and i30 N, so similar maintenance considerations apply. Check DCT fluid has been changed at recommended intervals. Electronic LSD function should be tested. Higher ride height means body roll is more noticeable than in the i30 N or Veloster N. Check for any CVT-related issues on the DCT. Front tires wear faster due to FWD and power delivery. Ensure all N-specific features (exhaust modes, driving modes) function correctly.
Built at Hyundai's Ulsan plant. Only offered with the 8-speed N DCT (no manual). FWD only, unlike some Kona variants. Shared its 2.0T engine and DCT with the Veloster N and i30 N. Discontinued in 2023 when the second-generation Kona launched without an N variant.
