Donkervoort D8 GTO Individual Series

The Donkervoort D8 GTO represents the extreme end of the lightweight sports car philosophy. Built in tiny numbers in Lelystad, Netherlands, by the company founded by Joop Donkervoort in 1978, the D8 GTO pairs an Audi 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine with a tubular steel chassis and carbon fiber bodywork weighing just 700 kg. The result is a power-to-weight ratio that leaves most supercars for dead.

With 380 horsepower pushing just 700 kg, the D8 GTO achieves a staggering power-to-weight ratio of 543 hp per ton. It rockets from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds, making it faster to 60 than a Bugatti Veyron. The car was the first to achieve a sub-zero g-force reading under braking (meaning it could decelerate at over 1g), and it set a production car record at the Bilster Berg circuit.

The driving experience is raw and visceral in a way that modern supercars cannot match. The Audi five-cylinder engine provides a distinctive sound, the manual Tremec gearbox requires deliberate shifting, and the ultra-light weight means every input produces an immediate response. There are no electronic nannies, no power steering, and minimal sound insulation.

Each D8 GTO is built to individual specification, with customers choosing from a vast array of options and personalization choices. The 'Individual Series' designation reflects this bespoke approach. Production is limited to roughly 20-30 cars per year, making every Donkervoort a rare proposition. The D8 GTO proved that a small Dutch company could build one of the world's most exciting driver's cars.

Verify specification and build number with Donkervoort factory. Check tubular chassis for corrosion, especially if the car has been used in wet conditions. Audi 2.5 TFSI engine is robust but turbo and oil supply lines should be inspected. AP Racing brakes need regular pad and fluid changes. The De Dion rear suspension setup should be checked for wear. Manual transmission synchros can wear from spirited driving. The car demands respect — check for crash damage or repair evidence.

Hand-built at Donkervoort's factory in Lelystad, Netherlands. Uses Audi 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder engine. Tubular steel space frame with carbon fiber bodywork. Each car built to individual customer specification. Limited production of approximately 20-30 units per year.
