McLaren MP4-12C

The McLaren MP4-12C represented one of the automotive industry's most ambitious ventures: a Formula 1 team building a road car company from scratch. Twenty years after the legendary F1, McLaren returned to road cars with a clean-sheet design that aimed to redefine the supercar segment dominated by Ferrari's 458 Italia and Lamborghini's Gallardo. The MP4-12C was built around a carbon-fiber MonoCell tub — the first time a monocoque had been used in a car at this price point — weighing just 75 kg. The bespoke M838T 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 was developed in partnership with Ricardo and produced 616 bhp. But the car's party piece was its ProActive Chassis Control — a hydraulic interconnected suspension system that eliminated the need for conventional anti-roll bars and could adjust ride and handling independently, giving the 12C both superb comfort and razor-sharp track capability. Critics initially found the 12C too clinical — fast but lacking emotional engagement. McLaren responded by continuously upgrading the car throughout production, adding power, refining the chassis, and eventually dropping the 'MP4' prefix. By the end of production, the 12C was a genuinely thrilling machine. It established McLaren Automotive as a serious volume manufacturer and spawned the entire Super Series lineage.

$90,000 – $160,000

Carbon MonoCell chassis is extremely strong but check for delamination after impacts. Engine and gearbox generally reliable but sensors and electronics can be troublesome. ProActive suspension hydraulic lines can leak. Early cars had various niggles that McLaren addressed. Service costs are high — McLaren dealer network only.

Launched 2011, continuously improved. Power grew from 592 to 616 hp. 12C Spider (convertible) from 2013. Replaced by 650S in 2014. MP4 prefix dropped during production.
