Pagani Zonda R Track Only
The Pagani Zonda R, unveiled in 2009, was the ultimate track-focused evolution of the Zonda platform. Unrestricted by road-legal requirements, the Zonda R was designed exclusively for circuit use, featuring the most powerful engine, lightest body, and most sophisticated aerodynamics of any Zonda variant.
The engine was a 6.0-liter Mercedes-AMG V12 derived from the CLK-GTR racing engine, producing 750 horsepower at 7500 rpm. This was a genuine racing engine, with a dry-sump lubrication system, lightweight internals, and an eagerness to rev that surpassed the road-going 7.3-liter units. The exhaust note, unencumbered by catalytic converters or noise regulations, was one of the most dramatic sounds in motorsport.
The Zonda R's body was entirely constructed from carbon fiber, with extensive aerodynamic elements including a massive front splitter, flat underbody, side-mounted dive planes, and an enormous rear wing. Total downforce at maximum speed exceeded 1,500 kilograms, more than the car's own weight, meaning the Zonda R could theoretically drive upside down on a ceiling at sufficient speed.
The chassis featured pushrod suspension with horizontally mounted Ohlins dampers, a layout borrowed from Formula One that provided superior wheel control and allowed the car to sit lower to the ground. An Xtrac six-speed sequential racing gearbox replaced the Cima unit used in road cars, providing even faster gear changes.
At 1,070 kilograms, the Zonda R was significantly lighter than any road-going Zonda, and the combination of 750 horsepower and low weight produced a power-to-weight ratio of 700 horsepower per ton. The result was performance that challenged prototype racing cars.
The Zonda R set a Nurburgring Nordschleife lap time of 6 minutes 47 seconds in 2010, a record for non-road-legal cars that stood for several years. This achievement validated the car's extraordinary performance capabilities and cemented its reputation as one of the most capable track cars ever produced by a small manufacturer.
Only 15 Zonda Rs were produced, each selling for approximately 1.7 million dollars. Despite being non-road-legal, these cars are among the most valuable and sought-after Paganis, treasured for their extreme performance, rarity, and the sheer audacity of their engineering.
With only 15 made, every example is significant. Track-only designation limits usage. Verify complete service records and track history. AMG racing engine requires specialized maintenance. Xtrac gearbox needs periodic rebuilding. Carbon body inspection critical. Storage conditions important. Not road registrable in most jurisdictions.
Only 15 units produced. Track-only, not road legal. AMG racing V12 6.0L (CLK-GTR derived) with 750hp. Xtrac sequential gearbox. Pushrod suspension from F1 technology. Set Nurburgring lap record for non-road-legal cars (6:47). Carbon fiber body with massive aerodynamic elements. Dry weight of just 1,070kg.
