Peugeot 306 GTI-6

The Peugeot 306 GTI-6 represented Peugeot's attempt to recapture the magic of the legendary 205 GTI in a more modern, refined package. Built on the excellent 306 platform, the GTI-6 featured a 2.0-liter XU10J4RS engine producing 167 hp, paired with a beautifully engineered six-speed manual transmission. The extra gear allowed drivers to make the most of the engine's power band while maintaining relaxed cruising at highway speeds. The chassis was the real star, featuring MacPherson struts up front and a sophisticated trailing arm rear suspension with anti-roll bar. Peugeot's engineers tuned the suspension for the perfect balance of compliance and control, with communicative steering that let drivers place the car with precision. Modest weight of 2,458 lbs meant the GTI-6 felt agile and responsive, with minimal body roll and exceptional grip. While not as raw or light as the 205 GTI, the 306 GTI-6 offered a more sophisticated driving experience with better refinement and practicality. Period reviews praised it as one of the finest front-wheel-drive cars available, with some critics preferring it to contemporary hot hatches from VW and Honda.

Rust is less severe than on the 205 GTI but still check sills, rear arches, and subframes. The XU10 engine is robust but needs regular oil changes - look for service history. Six-speed transmission is generally reliable but synchros can wear, particularly on second gear. Check for accident damage as many were driven enthusiastically. Suspension bushings wear and affect handling. Interior wear is common on high-mileage examples. Original unmolested examples are increasingly rare and valuable.

The GTI-6 was produced from 1996 to 1999 as both a three-door hatchback and later as a sedan. The six-speed transmission was unique to the GTI-6 model in the 306 range. Most examples were sold in Europe with limited numbers in other markets. Build quality was typical Peugeot of the era - good but not exceptional.
