Nissan NISMO 400R
The NISMO 400R stands as the most extreme factory Skyline GT-R ever produced. Built by NISMO as a limited production homologation special, it featured an extensively modified RB26DETT engine bored and stroked to 2.8 liters, designated RB-X GT2. This engine produced a genuine 400 horsepower at 6,800 rpm, breaking the Japanese gentleman's agreement. The block received strengthened internals, larger turbochargers with increased boost, a reinforced crankshaft, and race-spec pistons and connecting rods. The transmission was upgraded with closer gear ratios and a reinforced case. NISMO fitted a wider body with aggressive aerodynamic modifications including a large rear wing, revised front bumper with larger intakes, and side skirts. The suspension received complete reworking with adjustable dampers, stiffer springs, and revised geometry. Lightweight 18-inch RAYS wheels, upgraded Brembo brakes, and a stripped interior completed the package. With only 44 units produced at approximately $150,000 each in 1997, the 400R represented NISMO's ultimate expression of R33 GT-R performance and remains the most valuable R33 variant.
Extreme rarity makes authentication critical. Verify NISMO chassis plate and VIN matching 400R designation. Engine should have RB-X GT2 stamping. All 44 cars documented by NISMO with known histories. Original purchase documentation and service records essential. Most remain in Japan or have been exported to UK/Europe. Values have reached $400,000+ for pristine examples. Any 400R outside known registry should be considered suspect. Clones exist using R33 GT-Rs with modified engines and body kits. NISMO can verify authenticity. Expect comprehensive inspection before purchase. Parts availability extremely limited. Insurance specialized classic/exotic required. Import regulations strict for US (must be 25+ years).
