Volvo 850 R AWD
The Volvo 850 R transformed perceptions of what a Volvo could be. Before the 850, Volvos were respected for safety and durability but rarely considered exciting. The 850 Turbo changed that narrative, and the R version took it further: a 250 hp turbocharged inline-five engine, sport-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes, and a chassis developed with input from Volvo's touring car racing program. The 850 R was available as both sedan and wagon — and it was the wagon that captured the public imagination, especially after Volvo entered a trio of 850 Estates in the 1994 British Touring Car Championship. The sight of a Volvo wagon sliding sideways around Thruxton became one of motorsport's most enduring images. On the road, the 850 R delivered genuine sports sedan performance: the five-cylinder engine had a distinctive warble, torque steer was managed through clever geometry, and the car was quick enough to humble much more expensive German rivals. The AWD version (from 1997, as V70 R AWD) added all-wheel drive grip. The 850 R proved that Volvo's 'boxy but good' reputation could coexist with genuine performance, paving the way for future R-design and Polestar models.
Turbo five-cylinder reliable but check for boost leaks and PCV system condition. AWD system adds complexity — check haldex unit. Automatic gearbox (AW50-42) prone to issues — manual is rare and preferable. Check for rust in subframes and wheel arches. Wagons more collectible than sedans.
850 R produced 1996-97, continued as V70 R 1997-2000. AWD option from 1997. 2.3L turbo five-cylinder (B5234T4). Manual very rare — most are automatic. Also available as sedan.
