Audi S8 D2

The Audi S8 D2 is the quintessential sleeper — a full-size luxury sedan that could outrun most sports cars while looking like nothing more than an executive conveyance. Based on the revolutionary aluminum-bodied A8, the S8 added Audi's most powerful naturally aspirated engine and a sport-tuned chassis to create a car that combined genuine high performance with understated luxury.

The D2 A8 was already a landmark car when it launched in 1994. It was the world's first mass-produced car with an all-aluminum body, using Audi's Aluminum Space Frame (ASF) technology. The aluminum construction saved approximately 40% in weight compared to a steel equivalent, giving the A8 a significant dynamic advantage over its Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series competitors.

The S8, introduced in 1996, added a hand-assembled 4.2-liter V8 engine producing 340 hp (later upgraded to 360 hp in the 2001 facelift). This was Audi's first 40-valve engine — five valves per cylinder — and it was a masterpiece of naturally aspirated engineering. The engine revved freely to its 7,000 rpm redline with a raspy, mechanical soundtrack, and the power delivery was linear and progressive.

The quattro all-wheel-drive system, combined with the S8's low center of gravity (courtesy of the aluminum body) and sport-tuned suspension, gave the car extraordinary grip and composure. In dry conditions, the S8 could embarrass sports cars on twisty roads. In wet or snowy conditions, the quattro advantage was enormous — the S8 could deploy its power when rear-drive rivals were spinning their wheels.

The S8 achieved cult fame through the 1998 film 'Ronin,' in which one of the most celebrated car chase sequences in cinema history was filmed through the streets of Paris and Nice. Sam (Robert De Niro) and company used a silver S8 as their getaway vehicle, and the car's performance in the chase — sliding through narrow streets, blasting through tunnels, wrong-way on a highway — showcased its remarkable capabilities.

The S8's greatest strength was also its greatest weakness: its invisibility. The only visual differences from a standard A8 were subtle — lower suspension, larger wheels, quad exhaust tips, and small S8 badges. You could park one next to a BMW 750iL and most people wouldn't give it a second glance, despite the Audi being faster in virtually every measurable metric.

Today, the D2 S8 represents extraordinary value. A car that cost over $71,000 new can be purchased for a fraction of that. However, maintenance costs remain firmly in the luxury car category, and the aluminum body presents unique repair challenges.

$8,000 – $30,000

The D2 S8 offers astonishing performance for the money, but ownership requires commitment. The aluminum body is expensive to repair — even minor accident damage can cost thousands. The 4.2 V8 is generally reliable but timing chain guides and tensioners can fail around 150,000 km — replacement is a major job. The air suspension can fail (leaking air springs, compressor failure) and conversion to coilovers is common. The Tiptronic transmission is reliable but fluid changes are essential. Electrical complexity means specialist diagnosis is necessary. The 2001+ facelift models are more desirable (360 hp, updated styling). Full service history from an Audi specialist is highly recommended.

Exact S8 production numbers not publicly disclosed, but the D2 S8 was produced in relatively modest numbers compared to the standard A8. The original 340 hp version was produced from 1996-2000. The facelifted model (2001-2003) received 360 hp, revised styling, and updated technology. All D2 S8s featured the aluminum space-frame body and quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The 5-speed Tiptronic was the only transmission option.
