Ford Mustang LX 5.0
The 1989-1993 Ford Mustang LX 5.0 represented one of the best performance bargains of its era. While the GT model got all the attention with its ground effects and spoilers, the lighter, cheaper LX with the same 5.0-liter V8 became the choice of serious performance enthusiasts. The fuel-injected 302 produced 225 horsepower and strong torque. Combined with the lightweight body and manual transmission, the LX 5.0 could run with cars costing twice as much. Its understated appearance made it a true Q-ship, and its simple mechanicals made it easy to modify for even more performance.
Look for rust in shock towers and floor pans. The T5 transmission can be weak with modifications. Verify engine compression as these were often modified. Notchback coupes are more sought-after than hatchbacks. Clean, unmolested examples are increasingly rare.
The LX 5.0 was offered as a notchback coupe or hatchback from 1979-1993, with the final years being most desirable due to improved fuel injection and reliability. The notchback was lighter and preferred by drag racers.
