Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9
Introduced in 1986, the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 refined the hot hatch formula perfected by the earlier 1.6-liter model. The larger 1.9-liter XU9J1 engine produced 130 hp and crucially offered 119 lb-ft of torque, significantly more than the 1.6's 103 lb-ft. This extra mid-range punch made the 1.9 more flexible and easier to drive quickly, while maintaining the chassis magic that made the 205 GTI legendary. The combination of light weight (under 2,000 lbs), perfectly weighted rack-and-pinion steering, MacPherson strut front suspension, and trailing arm rear suspension with anti-roll bar created handling balance rarely seen in front-wheel-drive cars. The 1.9 could be thrown into corners with abandon, the chassis communicating every detail through the steering wheel and seat. Period reviews consistently ranked the 205 GTI 1.9 as the finest-handling front-drive car available, and many enthusiasts still consider it the greatest hot hatch ever made.
Rust is the primary concern - check sills, rear wheelarches, front crossmember, and sunroof drains. Verify service history as engines need regular maintenance. Check for accident damage as many were driven hard. Original unmolested examples are increasingly rare. Phase I models (1986-1988) with steel wheels and simple bumpers are particularly sought after. Avoid heavily modified examples unless professionally done.
The 1.9 model was produced alongside the 1.6 from 1986 onwards, becoming the volume seller in most markets except France where the 1.6 remained popular due to insurance costs. Late Phase II models (1992-1994) featured revised bumpers, grilles, and interior trim but the same mechanical formula.
