Opel Manta 400
The Opel Manta 400 represents General Motors' attempt to compete in Group B rallying and stands as one of the most distinctive homologation specials of the 1980s. Based on the Manta B2 coupe, the 400 received extensive modifications to meet Group B regulations. The 2.4-liter inline-four engine was specially developed, featuring Bosch fuel injection and producing 144 horsepower in street form, while competition versions generated over 275 horsepower.
Visually, the Manta 400 was unmistakable with dramatically widened fender flares housing 8-inch wide wheels, a deep front air dam, and large rear spoiler. The bodywork was extensively modified with aluminum and fiberglass panels to reduce weight. Inside, Recaro sport seats, additional gauges, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel created a competition atmosphere. The suspension was completely reworked with adjustable dampers, stiffer springs, and upgraded anti-roll bars.
In rally competition, the Manta 400 achieved notable success in the early 1980s despite facing fierce competition from more exotic all-wheel-drive rivals. The rear-wheel-drive layout required different driving techniques but could be very fast in the right hands. Drivers like Jimmy McRae, Ari Vatanen, and Guy Frequelin scored victories in the Manta 400, proving its competitiveness.
Only 245 road-going examples were produced to meet homologation requirements, making the Manta 400 extremely rare today. Most were sold in Europe, with the majority going to rally teams and enthusiasts. Today, the Manta 400 is highly collectible, particularly in Europe where the Manta nameplate holds cult status. Values have been rising steadily as collectors recognize these cars' significance in rally history and their distinctive character as one of the last rear-wheel-drive rally homologation specials.
Values range $45,000-$85,000 for good examples. Most in Europe. Verify authenticity as many replicas exist. Check for rust in sills and rear arches. Parts availability challenging. Rally history adds value but check for damage.
