Launched in 1964, the Opel Diplomat V8 represented General Motors' strategy to compete in the European executive car market with American technology. The car featured a 4.6-liter Chevrolet V8 engine producing 190 hp, giving it performance unmatched by most European rivals. Its spacious interior offered American-style comfort with European handling dynamics, and standard equipment included power steering, power brakes, and often automatic transmission. The Diplomat was popular with executives and government officials seeking prestige and performance, with approximately 55,000 units built across two generations before being replaced by the Senator in 1978.
