Lotus Esprit Turbo (Type 82)

The Lotus Esprit Turbo took the beautiful Giugiaro-designed wedge shape and added a Garrett turbocharger to create a true supercar rival at a fraction of the price. The turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder produced 210 hp, enough to propel the lightweight fiberglass body to nearly 150 mph. Colin Chapman's philosophy of lightweight construction meant the Esprit Turbo remained agile and responsive despite the added power. Distinguished by its distinctive body-color bumpers, spoilers, and TURBO badging, it offered exotic looks and performance while maintaining Lotus's trademark handling excellence.

$35,000 – $65,000

Check fiberglass body for cracks and stress fractures, especially around suspension mounting points. Galvanized chassis generally rust-free but verify. Turbo system requires proper maintenance - check for boost leaks. Citroen gearbox is robust but parts scarce. Interior wear common - replacement parts expensive. Many have been modified - document originality. Budget for specialist maintenance.

1,626 Turbo Esprit models were built from 1980 to 1987. The Series 3 (1981-1987) featured revised Giugiaro styling with body-color bumpers and improved interior. Used the Citroen SM gearbox. HC (High Compression) model from 1986 offered more power.
