Ford do Brasil Maverick GT V8 302
The Ford Maverick holds a unique place in Brazilian automotive history. While the American Ford Maverick was a modest economy car designed to compete with imports, the Brazilian version — produced by Ford do Brasil from 1973 to 1979 — evolved into something far more exciting. In a market dominated by Volkswagen Beetles and modest Chevrolet sedans, the Maverick GT V8 was a revelation: a genuine American-style muscle car built on Brazilian soil.
Ford do Brasil assembled the Maverick at its Sao Bernardo do Campo factory using a combination of local and imported components. The GT V8 variant received the Ford Windsor 302 cubic inch (4,942 cc) V8 engine, also built locally, producing 199 horsepower in Brazilian specification. While this was less than the American version due to different emissions and fuel requirements, the engine's substantial torque and the car's relatively light 1,290 kg curb weight provided strong performance.
The GT package added visual drama with stripes running over the hood and along the bodysides, a blacked-out grille, GT badges, and optional styled steel wheels. The interior featured bucket seats, a center console, and additional instrumentation including a tachometer. A 4-speed Top Loader manual gearbox was the choice of enthusiasts, though a C4 3-speed automatic was also available.
The Maverick arrived in Brazil during a period of rapid economic growth known as the 'Brazilian Miracle,' when rising middle-class prosperity created demand for aspirational vehicles. The GT V8 became the car of choice for young Brazilians who wanted American-style performance, and its styling — aggressive yet compact — suited Brazil's urban environments better than full-size American muscle cars would have.
Production ended in 1979 when Ford do Brasil shifted its focus to the locally developed Corcel and Del Rey models. The Maverick was almost immediately mourned by enthusiasts, and a passionate restoration and racing community emerged that remains active today. Brazilian Mavericks are a staple of classic car events throughout the country, and the V8 GT variants command premium prices.
The Ford do Brasil Maverick GT represents an important chapter in Latin American automotive culture — proof that muscle car enthusiasm transcended national boundaries and that Brazil's growing industrial base could produce cars that genuinely excited their owners.
Check for body rust — Brazilian humidity accelerates corrosion in floor pans, sills, and wheel arches. The Ford 302 V8 is robust and well-supported with parts globally. Verify the GT specification — many base Mavericks have been modified. The Top Loader 4-speed manual is significantly more valuable than the C4 automatic. Check the rear leaf springs for sagging. Interior trim and GT-specific components can be difficult to source. Brazilian Mavericks use metric fasteners in some areas and imperial in others.
