Volvo P1800 1800S

The Volvo P1800 is Sweden's most iconic car and proof that Volvo could produce something genuinely beautiful. Designed by Pelle Petterson (with input from Frua of Italy), the P1800 was an elegant, Italianate GT coupe that looked nothing like Volvo's stolid, sensible sedans.

The P1800 first gained international fame as Simon Templar's car in the ITV television series The Saint, starring Roger Moore. The white P1800 became so associated with the show that it's still the first thing many people think of when they see one.

Mechanically, the P1800 was based on Volvo's reliable Amazon sedan. The B18 (later B20) engine was a sturdy pushrod four-cylinder producing modest power — but this was a grand tourer, not a sports car. It was about covering long distances in comfort and style, which it did excellently. Volvo's legendary build quality meant the P1800 was far more reliable than its Italian-styled contemporaries.

The P1800 evolved through several versions: the original P1800 (Jensen-built, 1961-63, these have 'cow horn' bumpers), the 1800S (Volvo-built, 1963-69), the 1800E (fuel injection, 1970-72), and the 1800ES (sport wagon/shooting brake, 1972-73). The 1800ES, with its distinctive glass rear hatch, is now the most desirable variant — a forerunner of the modern sports wagon concept.

One P1800 holds the Guinness World Record for highest mileage: Irv Gordon of Long Island, New York, drove his 1966 1800S over 3.2 million miles (5.15 million km) before his death in 2018. It is the ultimate testament to Volvo reliability.

$25,000 – $70,000

The P1800 is a sturdy, reliable classic. Rust affects the same areas as other Volvos of the era: sills, floors, front wings, and around the windscreen. The mechanical components are shared with the Amazon sedan and are readily available and affordable. Check for overdrive gearbox function. The B18/B20 engines are nearly indestructible. Jensen-built cars (pre-1963) are rarer but had quality issues; Volvo-built cars are better made. The 1800ES is the most expensive variant due to its unique styling.

Total P1800 series production: 47,484 units. P1800 (Jensen-built): 6,000 (1961-63). 1800S: 23,993 (1963-69). 1800E: 9,414 (1970-72). 1800ES: 8,077 (1972-73). Early Jensen-built cars had quality issues; Volvo moved production in-house. The 1800ES shooting brake is the most collectible variant today. Irv Gordon's 3.2 million mile car is the highest mileage car in history.
