Bentley Batur Mulliner Coachbuilt

The Bentley Batur, unveiled at Monterey Car Week in 2022 and delivered from 2023, is the most powerful Bentley ever produced and the final grand statement of the W12 engine that had defined the Continental GT era. Named after Lake Batur in Bali, it followed the Bacalar as the second car from the revived Mulliner Coachbuilt programme.

The heart of the Batur is a significantly enhanced version of the 6.0-litre W12 engine, producing 740 bhp and an enormous 1,000 Nm of torque — representing increases of 81 bhp and 100 Nm over the Continental GT Speed. The engine modifications included revised turbocharger calibration, new intake and exhaust systems, and updated engine management software. Performance is extraordinary: 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 211 mph, making the Batur the fastest Bentley road car ever built.

Beyond the engineering, the Batur served as a design manifesto for Bentley's future. Its exterior styling, penned by design director Andreas Mindt, featured sharper lines, a more muscular stance, and new lighting signatures that would influence all subsequent Bentley models. The horseshoe-shaped rear light bar and aggressive front grille were particularly significant departures from the Continental GT's more restrained aesthetics.

The interior showcased Mulliner's latest innovations in sustainable luxury. A new 3D-printed 18-carat gold mesh insert was offered for the fascia — a world first in automotive design. Natural fibre composites replaced some carbon-fibre components, and Bentley's Sustainable Fuels programme meant each Batur could run on second-generation biofuel.

Each of the 18 customers worked directly with Bentley's design team to create their individual specification. Options extended to bespoke paint formulations, unique interior colour combinations, and personalised embroidery. Deliveries began in late 2023, with each car requiring significantly more build hours than a standard Continental GT.

The Batur represents a poignant farewell to the W12 era at Bentley. With the marque committed to full electrification by 2030, the Batur's enhanced twelve-cylinder engine is the most powerful expression of a powerplant family that defined Bentley's modern renaissance. For the 18 fortunate owners, it is both a collector's piece and a rolling monument to combustion engine excellence.

As Bentley's most expensive and exclusive modern production car, the Batur instantly became one of the most sought-after modern collectibles in the automotive world.
