Hongqi E-HS9 460 Long Range
The Hongqi E-HS9 is a statement of Chinese automotive ambition like few other vehicles. Hongqi, which translates as 'Red Flag,' is China's oldest and most prestigious automobile brand, historically reserved for state leaders and government officials. The E-HS9 represents Hongqi's bold move into the commercial luxury market with a full-size electric SUV that takes direct aim at the Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.
The E-HS9 is a genuinely imposing vehicle. At over 5.2 meters in length with a 3.1-meter wheelbase, it is one of the largest production SUVs available, offering genuine three-row seating for up to seven adults in exceptional comfort. The rear seats feature power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions, while the second row can be configured with individual captain's chairs with fold-out footrests for a limousine-like experience.
Dual electric motors produce a combined 551 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque through all four wheels. Despite the E-HS9's considerable 2,755 kg weight, this prodigious power provides impressive performance, with the 0-100 km/h sprint completed in approximately 5.0 seconds. The massive 120 kWh battery pack provides a CLTC range of approximately 460 kilometers, though real-world range is typically closer to 350-380 km given the vehicle's size and weight.
The air suspension system provides adjustable ride height and damping, allowing the E-HS9 to deliver both limousine-like comfort and reasonable off-road capability. The four-wheel-drive system includes terrain modes for different surface conditions, though the E-HS9 is primarily designed as a luxury road car rather than an off-road vehicle.
Hongqi's design team created a vehicle that combines traditional Chinese luxury cues with modern electric vehicle aesthetics. The massive upright grille with the Hongqi sunburst emblem, the flowing roofline, and the sophisticated LED lighting create a distinctive presence. The interior features extensive use of leather, wood, and metal, with build quality that approaches European luxury standards.
The technology package is comprehensive, including a large central touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, head-up display, massage seats, air purification, and Level 2+ driver assistance. A particularly interesting feature is the rear-seat entertainment system with individual screens for second-row passengers.
The E-HS9 is available in several international markets including Norway and other European countries, where it has attracted attention as a luxury EV alternative that offers exceptional space and equipment for its price. While brand recognition outside China remains limited, the E-HS9 represents Hongqi's most serious attempt at establishing an international presence.
