Cupra Formentor VZ5

The Cupra Formentor VZ5 is the ultimate expression of the Spanish performance brand's flagship model, and one of the most surprising applications of Audi's revered five-cylinder turbocharged engine. Limited to approximately 7,000 units, the VZ5 takes the already stylish Formentor SUV coupe and transforms it into a genuine performance machine that can challenge established rivals costing significantly more.

The engine is the star of the show. Borrowed from the Audi RS3 and TT RS, the EA855 Evo 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder produces 390 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. This characterful engine, with its distinctive firing order that creates a unique warbling exhaust note, is one of the great performance engines of the modern era. In the Formentor, it provides effortless acceleration with a soundtrack that few SUVs can match.

The all-wheel-drive system uses a Haldex coupling to distribute torque between the front and rear axles, while an electronic torque-vectoring differential at the rear can apportion drive between the rear wheels individually. Combined with adaptive DCC dampers and progressive steering, the VZ5 delivers handling that belies its SUV proportions.

The Formentor's SUV coupe body style is distinctive and well-proportioned. The roofline slopes dramatically toward the rear, giving the car a dynamic profile that stands out in the crowded crossover market. The VZ5 adds unique styling elements including quad exhaust tips, copper accents (Cupra's signature color), and specific 19-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the VZ5 features sport bucket seats with integrated headrests, Alcantara trim on the steering wheel and shift knob, and copper stitching throughout. The digital cockpit and 12-inch infotainment screen provide comprehensive vehicle information, while a dedicated Cupra mode button on the steering wheel allows instant access to the most aggressive driving settings.

The VZ5 was limited in production because the five-cylinder engine was phased out due to emissions regulations. This finite supply has made the VZ5 immediately collectible, as it represents one of the last opportunities to buy a new car with this legendary engine family. The combination of limited production, a soon-to-be-extinct powertrain, and genuine performance credentials suggests the VZ5 will appreciate in value.

As a statement of intent for the Cupra brand, the Formentor VZ5 succeeds brilliantly. It demonstrates that a Spanish manufacturer can create a performance SUV that competes with and arguably surpasses established German rivals, while offering something unique in terms of character and value.

$40,000 – $60,000

The five-cylinder engine is proven reliable from its Audi RS3 service. Check for turbo bearing condition and ensure regular oil changes have been performed. The 7-speed DSG requires fluid changes every 40,000 miles. Haldex coupling service is essential. Check for brake disc warping if the car has been used enthusiastically. Limited production means secondhand values are strong. Full service history is important.

Limited to approximately 7,000 units worldwide due to the five-cylinder engine's production constraints. The EA855 Evo engine is shared with the Audi RS3 and TT RS. Built at SEAT's Martorell plant. The VZ5 was only available in select European markets. Production began in 2021.
