McLaren GT Grand Tourer

The McLaren GT represented a significant departure for a company previously focused entirely on track-derived performance. Designed from the outset as a grand touring car, the GT offered a more refined, comfortable, and practical McLaren experience while retaining the engineering fundamentals that distinguished the brand.

The new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 (replacing the 3.8 in most McLaren models) produced 612 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, calibrated for a broad, accessible power delivery rather than the top-end rush of the more sporting models. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission was recalibrated for smoother, more refined shifts in Comfort mode.

The most significant practical innovation was the luggage space. A glazed rear hatch opened to reveal a 420-litre rear luggage area, supplemented by a 150-litre front trunk, giving a total capacity of 570 litres. This was genuinely practical for two people traveling with luggage, a first for a McLaren. The rear storage area was lined with luxury materials and could accommodate golf bags or ski equipment.

The chassis was tuned specifically for grand touring comfort. The springs were softer than any previous McLaren, the adaptive dampers calibrated for ride quality as a priority, and the noise insulation was significantly enhanced. In Comfort mode, the GT could waft over broken surfaces with a suppleness that would have been unthinkable in earlier McLarens.

Yet the GT remained fundamentally a McLaren. The carbon fiber MonoCell II-T chassis provided exceptional rigidity and safety. The steering retained its hydraulic assistance and communicative character. Switch to Sport or Track modes, and the GT's sporting character emerged with the kind of precision and feedback that defined the McLaren experience.

The design, by Rob Melville, created a more elegant and less aggressive silhouette than other McLarens. The proportions were longer and more flowing, with a distinctive wraparound windscreen that extended into the roof. The result was a car that looked more refined and less combative than its siblings.

The interior was the most luxurious McLaren cabin to date, with premium leather, Alcantara, and an electrochromic glass roof as standard. The seats were designed for long-distance comfort rather than lateral support, and the driving position was slightly more relaxed. An improved infotainment system with larger display addressed previous criticisms of McLaren's cabin technology.

The McLaren GT proved that the company could expand its repertoire without compromising its core values. It offered a unique proposition: the engineering excellence and driver engagement of a McLaren in a package that could genuinely serve as a continent-crossing grand touring car.

The 4.0-litre engine has proven reliable in early ownership. Check dual-clutch transmission for smooth operation. The glazed rear hatch and large glass roof should be inspected for any seal issues. Adaptive damper condition is important for the GT's ride quality. McLaren dealer service history is essential. The front trunk hinge mechanism should be checked for proper operation. Depreciation has been significant from new, representing good value.

Produced at McLaren's Woking facility from 2019. The 4.0-litre engine was new for the GT application. The MonoCell II-T chassis featured a luggage-optimized rear structure. The GT was positioned alongside rather than above the Sports Series in McLaren's lineup.
