Genesis G70 3.3T Sport
The Genesis G70 3.3T Sport, introduced in 2018, was the car that forced the automotive world to take Korea's luxury ambitions seriously. Developed under the direction of Albert Biermann during his tenure overseeing Hyundai's performance and luxury chassis engineering, the G70 was designed from the ground up to challenge the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C-Class, and Audi A4, and it succeeded spectacularly.
The 3.3T variant was powered by a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing 365 horsepower and 376 lb-ft of torque. This Lambda II engine was specifically developed for Genesis's luxury applications and provided smooth, effortless power delivery combined with a refined exhaust note. The engine was available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, with the RWD Sport version offering the most engaging driving experience.
Chassis development was where the G70 truly excelled. Biermann's BMW M engineering background was evident in the car's balance, steering feel, and overall dynamics. The multi-link front and rear suspension used advanced geometry optimized for the platform's rear-biased weight distribution, while Brembo brakes with four-piston front calipers provided powerful, fade-resistant stopping power.
The mechanical limited-slip differential on the RWD 3.3T was a rarity in its segment, providing genuine mechanical traction advantage out of corners. Combined with the adaptive dampers and Sport+ driving mode, the G70 could transition from comfortable luxury sedan to engaging sports car with a press of a button.
Design was handled by Luc Donckerwolke, former head of design at Bentley and Lamborghini. His interpretation of the Genesis design language created a car that was distinctive yet restrained, with the signature Crest Grille and Athletic Elegance theme providing a visual identity that was uniquely Genesis.
Inside, the G70 offered a driver-centric cockpit with high-quality materials, quilted leather seats, and a comprehensive infotainment system. While not quite matching the tactile quality of the best German interiors, the G70's cabin was remarkably close and offered significantly more standard equipment at a lower price.
The G70 3.3T won the 2019 North American Car of the Year award, a remarkable achievement for a brand that was barely three years old. Automotive journalists consistently praised its driving dynamics, with many declaring it the best-handling sedan in its class. The combination of performance, luxury, and value created a compelling proposition that even the most brand-loyal BMW and Mercedes buyers found difficult to ignore.
The G70 proved that Genesis was not content to compete merely on price. It was built to win on merit, and its continued success in comparison tests against its German rivals validated this ambitious approach.
The 3.3T V6 is generally reliable but requires premium fuel. The 8-speed automatic should shift smoothly. Check for turbo-related oil consumption on higher-mileage examples. Brembo brakes are effective but pad and rotor replacement is more expensive than standard. RWD Sport models with the LSD are the most desirable. Genesis dealer network is still expanding in some markets. Verify the 10-year/100,000-mile warranty transfer status.
Built at Hyundai's Ulsan plant alongside other Genesis models. The 3.3T engine is shared with the Genesis G80 and Kia Stinger GT. Albert Biermann supervised chassis development. The 2022 facelift brought updated styling and a revised interior. Available with RWD or AWD. The Sport trim added a mechanical LSD, Brembo brakes, and sport seats.
